Introduction to Messengers of Peace

Sir Robert Baden Powell 3 rd International Congress of Moral Education Geneva, 1 st of August 1922 If we apply love in place of fear we at once gain the diminution of poverty, crime, and disease in our individual countries, and we gain peace between the nations through mutual trust, honor, and goodwill.

What Is Messengers of Peace? Messengers of Peace is a global initiative designed to inspire millions of young people in more than 220 countries and territories to work toward peace. Scouts from around the world share what they’ve done and inspire fellow Scouts to undertake similar efforts in their own communities.

What Is Messengers of Peace? VISION: In the coming 10 years, at least two thirds of the world’s 30 million Scouts will become effective “Messengers for Peace”, change their world for the better, and send a message of peace to at least 200 million people.

What Is Messengers of Peace? In 2001 Messengers for Peace was launched by the Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al Saud and King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden.

What Is Messengers of Peace? By 2007, 10 million Scouts in 110 countries had worked on the program “Gifts for Peace”. Messengers of Peace is the second phase and strives to have 20 million Scouts become Messengers of Peace.

What Is Messengers of Peace? Peace in the Messengers of Peace program has three dimensions:  Personal  Community  Environmental

Personal Dimension Any project conducted that impacts a single person or small groups of people. Relatively easy to accomplish and conduct as an individual or as a unit. Examples are:  Conducting a book drive  Making and donating boxes to feed the hungry  Assisting home maintenance for needy members of the community  Helping or conducting a holiday party for less fortunate families

Community Work on a project that provides help to a community as a whole and reduces need and conflict Examples include:  Building a common accessible area like a park  Cleaning up vandalism  Sponsoring conflict resolution workshops in a school  Helping in an effort to provide help to countries in need  Help in a first aid training event/emergency drill

Environmental Work on a project that has an environmental impact Examples are:  Shoreline restoration  Invasive species remediation  Creating Fire Breaks  Any Hornaday project

PEACE Wellness Food Creativity Human Rights Diversity Understanding No Violence Collaboration Good neighbors Respect Water Open dialogue Water Security Sanitation Equal Access to Justice Life Skills Bullying Food Security Discrimination Corruption

Ok? So …. Messenger of Peace is an international initiative to build excitement for service projects and for a betterment of oneself, the community we live in, and the world overall. It is easy, fun, and teaches Scouts to be aware of how their service to others helps not only themselves but any number of others.

Scouts Give Service. You Already Are

Really? Most council-sponsored events your unit participates in like  Scout Sunday or Sabbath (Personal Dimension)  Superbowl of Caring (Community Dimension)  Trash Bash (Environmental Dimension) already qualify for the MoP designation on some level.

So… wait… WHAT?? Here is the awesome news. If you can qualify your project as being a part of the Messengers of Peace program, you can add them as beneficiary when you enter it into JTE. You do enter your service hours into JTE don’t you?

1)Start entering your Project into the Service Hours reporting website. 3) Select Messengers of Peace, and while holding the Ctrl key down, select another entity that benefitted. 4) MoP does not take away the group, organization, or beneficiary you did the project for! It adds a beneficiary, and has no other impact. 5)Your project will get added to the MoP page as hours only, and you can submit it to the WOSM page and add pictures or video if you want to showcase yourself. However, it is not required. 2)Select Messengers of Peace, and while holding the Ctrl key down, select another entity that benefitted.

What’s In It For My Unit? Besides the fact that you rendered service, got a good feeling for doing so and helped someone or something, you will be able to sport the üebercool Messengers of Peace ring patch that can be worn around the WOSM emblem on the uniform of the Scouts and Scouters that participated. …. And all this for one click while holding down the Ctrl key! It can’t get any easier than that.

What’s In It For My Unit? The certificate is available through the Messengers of Peace site and is suitable for framing and proudly displaying it.

What we ask you to do: Please discuss the Messengers of Peace program when you distribute your patches. It will reinforce the reasons you are receiving the patch and the impact of the project. It is not a requirement but should help to explain and promote the program, and you can use it to build good will for those Scouts or parents that missed participation this time and use it for an incentive for the next project.

Making a difference? In December 2013, 68 Scouts from the Inter- American Region attended a training course called Inter-American Leadership Training. During this course, the Scouts were assigned teams and were challenged to come up with a Messengers of Peace project.

Making a difference? Since the training course and the initial date of April 26, September 27 was added to accommodate the differing planting seasons. What started as an idea of 11 Scouts that had never met before at Camp Strake just north of Houston, Texas turned into 15,000 Scouts in 33 Countries on six continents planting more than 66,000 trees.

The WOSM website tracks submitted projects from all over the world.

…and if you want to share a story about your Messengers of Peace project with other Scouts throughout the world, submit it to the site. You can upload a write up, photos, and even videos if available.

Sir Robert Baden Powell 3 rd International Congress of Moral Education Geneva, 1 st of August 1922 This may seem to many to be an utopian dream too visionary for practical politics, and the question would naturally be asked: “Could it ever be brought about in practice”?
