What is ? Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit

UNDERSTANDING BLASPHEMY: There are different kinds of blasphemy 1

“I tell you the truth, all sin and blasphemy can be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven.” ~ Mark 3:28-29 (NLT)

βλασφημέω (blasphēmiā)

Blasphemy Includes: Misusing the name of God Insulting or slandering God Elevating other “gods” to be equal or superior to the one true God Viewing yourself as equal or superior to God

But the Pharisees and teachers of religious law said to themselves, “Who does he think he is? That’s blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!” ~ Luke 5:21 (NLT)

UNDERSTANDING BLASPHEMY: Only blasphemy of the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven 2

“…Anyone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven “…Anyone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. This is a sin with eternal consequences.” ~ Mark 3:29 (NLT)

“Anyone who speaks against the Son of Man can be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, either in this world or in the world to come.” ~ Matthew 12:32 (NLT)

Then a demon-possessed man, who was blind and couldn’t speak, was brought to Jesus. He healed the man so that he could both speak and see. The crowd was amazed and asked, “Could it be that Jesus is the Son of David, the Messiah?” But

when the Pharisees heard about the miracle, they said, “No wonder he can cast out demons. He gets his power from Satan, the prince of demons.” ~ Matthew 12:22-24 (NLT)

UNDERSTANDING BLASPHEMY: Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is accusing the Holy Spirit of being evil 3

“…Anyone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven…” He told them this because they were saying, “He’s possessed by an evil spirit.” ~ Mark 3:29-30 (NLT)

What sorrow for those who say that evil is good and good is evil, that dark is light and light is dark, that bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter. ~ Isaiah 5:20 (NLT)

UNDERSTANDING BLASPHEMY: “Will not” be forgiven does not mean it “cannot” be forgiven 4

“I tell you the truth, all sin and blasphemy can be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven.” ~ Mark 3:28-29 (NLT)

Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away. ~ Acts 3:19 (NLT)

UNDERSTANDING BLASPHEMY: Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit prevents us from turning to Him in repentance 5

…He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. ~ Titus 3:5 (NLT)

…They were saying,* “He’s possessed by an evil spirit.” ~ Mark 3:30 (NLT) * Imperfect tense, implying it was continual; ongoing

“If you are worried that you may have committed the sin and can't be forgiven, then don't be concerned. If you are worrying about it, then you haven't committed it. If you are worried about it, then that is a sign that you have not committed it. If you had, you wouldn't be concerned.” ~ from CARM

“And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak.” ~ Matthew 12:36 (NLT)

Don’t use foul or abusive language Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. ~ Ephesians 4:29 (NLT)

Keep your servant from deliberate sins. Don’t let them control me Keep your servant from deliberate sins! Don’t let them control me. Then I will be free of guilt and innocent of great sin. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. ~ Psalm 19:13-14 (NLT)
