A Couple of Common Misunderstandings  Misunderstanding #1: “Work was made necessary because of the Fall of humanity – the sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.”  Scripture says, “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” Genesis 2:15

A Couple of Common Misunderstandings  Misunderstanding #2: “There is a strong distinction between sacred and secular.”  Scripture says, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 1 Co 10:31

Today, I want to begin addressing… What about my “9 to 5” job (or whatever hours you work)? What about my “9 to 5” job (or whatever hours you work)? What is the relationship between my “9 to 5” job, and my calling as a follower of Christ? What is the relationship between my “9 to 5” job, and my calling as a follower of Christ? What if I hate my job? What if I hate my job? How can I make a connection between my “Sunday life” and my “Monday through Saturday life” in a way that pleases God? How can I make a connection between my “Sunday life” and my “Monday through Saturday life” in a way that pleases God?

God’s Word and God’s Call Ministry serves two basic purposes: Ministry serves two basic purposes: The ministry of the word of God teaches believers that there is a new day coming, that one day all of our suffering will be over, in the New Heaven and the New Earth. The ministry of the word of God teaches believers that there is a new day coming, that one day all of our suffering will be over, in the New Heaven and the New Earth. The ministry of the word of God teaches believers how to live in this present age, or this present time. God does not take us to be with Himself immediately upon our conversion to Christ. The ministry of the word of God teaches believers how to live in this present age, or this present time. God does not take us to be with Himself immediately upon our conversion to Christ.

God’s Word and God’s Call My “guest” this week – Chuck Smith. (That’s not Chuck – that’s Jackson Smith)

Colossians 3: Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Colossians 3: Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.

Colossians 3: Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

Colossians 3: Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Colossians 3: Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Colossians 3:1-25  Our position is heavenly, in Christ; our thoughts and actions should reflect that heavenly position – 3:1-4.  Our life in Christ is to be free of the “besetting sins” that surround us; also, our life in Christ is ultimately free of cultural, ethnic, and economic distinctions; rather, Christ is to be all in all! – 3:5-11  As God’s chosen people, we should exhibit positive virtues of life in Christ – 3:12-17.

Colossians 3: Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 18 Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. 19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. 20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. 20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged. 21 Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.

Colossians 3:1-25 Colossians 3:1-17 has reminded us of who we are in Christ, and of our perspective on things eternal. Colossians 3:1-17 has reminded us of who we are in Christ, and of our perspective on things eternal. Colossians 3:18-25 reminds us that we still live here on earth, and that issues of family, and of economics, and of where we find ourselves (our calling), are still important to God, and demand a proper, biblical response. Colossians 3:18-25 reminds us that we still live here on earth, and that issues of family, and of economics, and of where we find ourselves (our calling), are still important to God, and demand a proper, biblical response.

Colossians 3:1-4:1 22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. 25 Those who do wrong will be repaid for their wrongs, and there is no favoritism. 4:1 Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven.

Colossians 3:1-25  “Slaves, obey your earthly masters.” – translation, “Be a dependable, reliable, productive employee.” – v. 22a.  Submit sincerely to the demands and wishes of your employer – v. 22b.  Practice your work as something you are doing for the Lord, and not just for your employer – v. 23.  The Lord will reward you; after all, it is He whom you are serving – vv  Masters, provide what is fair for your employees – 4:1
