Mrs. Shaughnessy’s African- Style Masks This project dealt with the 3 rd grade standard about mixing tints and shades from only one color. This means that each mask is monochromatic: only using black, white and one actual color. Students were directed to make the masks symmetrical using graphite transfer techniques. (Your student can show you how!) They were also to decorate the masks using geometric shapes instead of organic ones. Finally, they were encouraged not to put pupils in the eyes to mimic the blank stare often seen in African tribal masks.
