Engineering Systems & Design Graduate Programmes

The ESD PhD Programme

 Supply chains and logistics  Transportation systems  Healthcare delivery systems  Financial services  Telecommunications systems  Power generation and distribution Focus on Large Scale Complex Systems

 Operations Research  Operations Management  Applied Probability & Statistics  Game Theory  Economics  Behavioral Decision Sciences  Public Policy A multidisciplinary programme with grounding in:

 Energy  Environment  Health  Food  Water  Security  Livability Engagement with Big Societal Challenges

The MIT-SUTD Dual Masters Programme

 2-year programme  Joint collaboration between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD)  Support outstanding individuals to maximize their potential in the fields of technology and design  A unique opportunity to earn two degrees, one from MIT and one from SUTD, and to spend a year in each university. MIT-SUTD Dual Master’s Programme

 First year – Coursework at MIT In MIT, students will pursue his/her study in one of the following programme: Civil and Environmental Engineering’s Master of Engineering Program, specialising in one of four tracks:  Environmental and Water Quality Engineering  Geotechnology  High-Performance Structures  Transportation Master of Engineering in Manufacturing System Design and Management Program, leading to a Master of Science in Engineering and Management Supply Chain Management Program, leading to a Master of Engineering in Logistics Dual Master’s Programme Structure

 Second year – Research at SUTD Students will complete a second thesis by research leading to a Master of Engineering (Research) degree. Dual Master’s Programme Structure

ESD faculty comes from the very best universities in the world, including MIT, Stanford, Cambridge, and Cornell, with research appearing in leading academic journals. World-class Faculty

Broad Research Interests Supply chains, logistics, transportation, financial engineering, innovation & entrepreneurship, optimization, economics & game theory, stochastic systems, telecommunication systems, renewable energy, electricity markets

ESD PhD – First Cohort (Sept 2013) “A fundamental aspect is the focus of the ESD program and the applications in which it is involved. Not only theoretical or utopian applications but REAL applications. The courses and the faculty members are also very important aspects that attracted me.” Giorgio Sartor, Italy “What fascinates me the most about the ESD PhD programme at SUTD is the innovative collaborative approach towards teaching and research the university is promoting. The educational system to me seems to be geared towards stimulating creativity and curiosity in its students, and I am very much looking forward to experiencing the spirit that arises in this environment. It was very interesting to me that PhD students are expected to actively take part in teaching, which I hope will serve as a good complement to the technical knowledge PhD students usually come equipped with.” Harald Bernhard, Germany

ESD PhD – First Cohort (Sept 2013) “Compared to other PhD programmes I approached in Europe, the ESD PhD does not require supervision by only one Professor; thus I can potentially work on two or three different research projects under different supervisors. In support of this is the fact that the PhD scholarship is provided by the Institution rather than by the Faculty or by the Chair of a single Professor, as it often happens in Europe. Another distinction is the multidisciplinary interests of the ESD faculty, which I believe leaves me the chance to dig deeper into the theoretical aspects of one field as well as to work “horizontally” across more fields; this last approach is more suitable for applied projects and for a potential future career in the industry.” Giacomo Dalla Chiara, Italy

ESD PhD – First Cohort (Sept 2013) “Though SUTD is a newly established university, the unique pedagogy promises it to be a success in the near future. For me, dedicated to be a researcher, SUTD provides me a quite different atmosphere, where you can brainstorm with faculties from various areas.” Yang Yufei, China “I live my life with the hope of making the world a better place to live in and I want to influence students to do the same! For this, I am hoping to work on any possible real life environmental, sociological and health related studies. In so far, I had had the opportunity to work with a company that produces biodiesel from waste oil collected from restaurants in Istanbul, Turkey. I hope I can do many of more projects of similar nature.” Ozge Tuncel, Turkey

A rigorous set of common courses:  Linear Optimization  Stochastic Models  Statistics  Operations Management A diverse set of advanced technical electives:  Methodologies  Applications Coursework

Ideal structure 1st year: courses + qualifying exam + research project 2nd year: courses + research project 3rd year and on : thesis work

 Ability to work with multiple faculty members and be engaged in multiple research projects  Two summer research projects with different faculty members Flexible Advising Structure

 Faculty positions in Schools of Business, or Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, Public Policy, Applied Mathematics  Research positions in government and industry labs  Entrepreneurs Multiple Career Paths

 A unique multidisciplinary environment in one of the world’s largest system groups  A rigorous and broad training in the methods and applications of engineering systems  Emphasis on addressing important science and engineering problems and big societal challenges  An international and well connected faculty The distinctiveness of SUTD
