SHAPING MINDS, BUILDING LEADERSHIP  Leadership is the transformation of expertise and vision into actions that are judged effective by the led (Cowan & Heywood, 2001)  Academic leadership as ‘… a practical and everyday process of supporting, managing, developing and inspiring academic colleagues...’ (Ramsden, 1998:4)  Academic leadership is the act of building a community of scholars to set direction and achieve common purpose through the empowerment of faculty and staff (Gmelch & Wolverton, 2002)

Strong and Sustainable Leadership A nation’s success can only come, and be sustainable by an intellectual leader with a strong character. To strategise and ensure that the leadership will ‘be able to withstand the global storms and lead us through challenges high and low to take us to greater heights of success.’ Asian IHL leaders need to be more visible in a changing global HE landscape.
