National Action Summit for Latino Workers Health and Safety April 14 th and 15 th

Concept: The VDS is a program to provide on-site assistance and outreach to low-income and Hispanic immigrant families unfamiliar with the US health system.

Objectives:  Increase the health conditions and to strength the diseases prevention mechanisms of Mexican families living in the U.S.  Increase the knowledge and utilization of public health programs  Reduce the use of ER services  Create a trusting information center that provides referrals and materials for the Mexican families living in the U.S.  Establish an active and direct collaboration between organisms/health institutions, Mexican consulates, health departments (multi-sector collaboration)

Results of an OH Pilot Study with Center for Immigrant Health (NYC) and NIOSH 185 participants surveyed/ 77% were under age 40 and 68% were male Lines of work 37% in restaurants 18% in cleaning industry 12% in construction Work related pain 18% reported suferring from pain or illness related to work 79% were musculoskeletal pain (back and shoulder pain, foot pain, carpal tunnel syndrome)

VDS role to improve occupational safety and health for Mexican immigrant workers Collecting and analyzing data about immigrant workers Information dissemination of Occupational and Safety Health materials and programs. Access to Resources for prevention treatment and advocacy
