Keep the pattern of sound words learned from Paul, and the faith and love in Christ. Flee Youthful lusts. Instead pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace.

SUMMARY OF 2 TIMOTHY THUS FAR Onesiphorus wasn’t ashamed of Paul, had earnestly sought him out, and had refreshed him often. Be Strong! Endure Hardship, remain disciplined. Be diligent to be an approved worker of God.

SUMMARY OF 2 TIMOTHY THUS FAR Stay away from profane and idle talk, because of the ungodliness it promotes. God’s solid foundation stands! The Lord knows who is His. Just as a house has vessels of various degrees of value and usefulness, there are various levels of faithfulness among God’s servants.

SUMMARY OF 2 TIMOTHY THUS FAR Avoid foolish disputes. Don’t quarrel, but be humble when correcting others.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-9 “ But know this” : literally “this be knowing”, i.e. be keeping this in your mind. “In the last days” : Compare Joel 2:28-32; Acts 2:1; Hebrews 1:2; 1 Timothy 4:1: “Last days” is a term used to describe the dispensation of time that began on Pentecost in Acts 2 and extends until Christ returns.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-9 “Perilous times will come”: hard to bear, grievous. Times of difficulty. “Men will be lovers of themselves” : Greek word for “lovers” here is from philos, meaning affection. We must deny ourselves to be followers of Jesus (Matthew 16:24). Selfishness, putting ourselves first, is often the cause of many sins.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-9 “Lovers of Money”: Covetous (KJV). Gk. Philarguros, philos (affection) arguros (silver). See similar warning in 1 Timothy 6:9-10, 17-19; Matt. 6: “Boasters” : Gk. alazon. An empty pretender. Those who make false claims of power or of some other ability. Romans 12:3.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-9 “Proud”: Gk. huperephanos, showing oneself above others. (Haughty, Arrogant) Philippians 2:2-4, Romans 12:16; James 4:6 “Blasphemers” : Gk. blasphemos. Railers. Speaking evil, slanderous, abusive speech against God or man.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-9 “Disobedient to Parents”: Obedience Commanded by God. Ephesians 6:1. Law of Moses required offender to be stoned. Deut. 21: Failure to obey can also be associated with inadequate discipline on the part of parents. Proverbs 23: “Unthankful” : Those that do not appreciate what God or man has done or does for them. Could be connected with the idea of disobedience to parents above.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-9 “Unholy”: Gk. anosios. Impious wicked. Those who are irreligious. “Unloving or Without natural affection”: Heartless. Gk. astorgos. Storgos refers to love between parents/children, husband/wife, thus the letter “a” negates the meaning. Romans 1:31.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-9 “Unholy”: Gk. anosios. Impious wicked. Those who are irreligious. “Trucebreakers or Implacable”: Unforgiving (NKJV). Irreconcilable (NASB). Gk. aspondos. Refusing to enter a treaty. Those who won’t be bound by an agreement. Perhaps promise but don’t fulfill it.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-9 “Slanderers or False accusers”: Gk. diabolos. Something said for the purpose of damaging another person’s reputation. Generally false, but could also include truth that is unnecessarily circulated. “Without self control”: Incontinent (KJV). Irreconcilable (NASB). Gk. akrates. Literally, “without power.” Refusing to control sexual desires, appetites for money, failure to control our tongue, failure to resist worldly pleasures.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-9 “Brutal or Fierce”: Gk. anemeros. Not tame, savage. Generally false, but could also include truth that is unnecessarily circulated. “Despisers of (those that are) Good”: Gk. aphilagathos. Literally, “not fond of that which is good.” Titus 1:8.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-9 “Traitors”: Gk. prodotes. A person who, when it is to their advantage, betrays a person or trust. Used of Judas in Luke 6:16 and of those who betrayed the Christ in Acts 7:52. “Headstrong”: Gk. propetes. Reckless. Obstinate. One who stubbornly pursues his own plans. Implies emotions, passions, bias. Titus 1:8.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-9 “Haughty”: Gk. tuphoo. Literally means to “raise a smoke, to wrap in a mist”. Used metaphorically of self conceit or pride. Puffed up, conceited. High- minded. 1 Tim 6:4; throughout 1 Cor. “Lovers of Pleasures rather than lovers of God”: Would include sensual pleasures, but may include non-sinful pleasures (recreation, cares of the world, party type of spirit) that take priority over God. Hebrews 11:24-26.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-9 “Having a form of godliness but denying its power”: Form: Gk. morphosis. an outward form or image. Godliness refers to reverence and respect for God and His will. Refers to those who make an outward profession of godliness, but their lives and deeds do not reflect it. Those the do not allow God’s power to work in their hearts and change their lives.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-9 “From such turn away”: Possibly a reference to withdrawal such as in 1 Cor. 5:1; 2 Thess. 3:6. Failure to administer discipline as directed by God allows wickedness of one or some to influence others. 1 Cor. 5:6. Could also refer to the need to avoid those who have a bad influence on us. 1 Cor. 15:33.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-9 “For of this sort are those….make captive of gullible (silly) women”: Gullible women: Gk. gunaikarion. A little woman. Little in terms of her strength of character and spirituality. Easily influenced by the type of people just described. “Loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts”: due to their guilt, they are easy targets for those who promise ease of conscience.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-9 “Always learning but never coming to a knowledge of the truth”: They may have had a desire to learn, but they never really accept the law of God. “as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these resist the truth”. Not named in the OT, but early Jewish tradition associates these names with the Egyptian magicians in Exodus 7:11; 9:11. The types of people mentioned earlier resist the truth as these men did.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-9 “disapproved (reprobate) concerning the faith”: Disapproved: Gk. adokimos. Rejected after having been tested for approval. “but they will progress no further (not get very far)….folly..plain to all, as their was”. Folly: Gk. anoia. without understanding, senselessness. As it did in Moses’ day, truth and righteousness always wins.
