Battle for Ratification IN THE UNITED STATES The person responsible for rallying the republican party against ratification of the Treaty of Versailles was a republican senator named Henry Cabot Lodge. He led a group of republicans that would accept joining the league of nations and the treaty if certain reservations were added to the agreement, but Wilson refused to budge so the Treaty was never passed by the senate.
