Technical Terms and Definitions The terms and definitions listed below are discussed in this lesson. Please review before proceeding with this lesson. TermsDefinitions EngineeringAccording to the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPEs), it is the profession in which a knowledge of mathematical and natural sciences, gained by study, experience, and practice, is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind. 4 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Technical Terms and Definitions The terms and definitions listed below are discussed in this lesson. Please review before proceeding with this lesson. TermsDefinitions ScienceThe study of the physical and natural world and phenomena, especially by using systematic observation and experiment. 5 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Technical Terms and Definitions The terms and definitions listed below are discussed in this lesson. Please review before proceeding with this lesson. TermsDefinitions TechnologyIs the application of tools and methods: the study, development, and application of devices, machines, and techniques for manufacturing and productive processes. 6 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Who Are Engineers? They invent, design, develop, manufacture, test, sell, and service products and services that improve people’s lives. 7 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Who Are Scientists? They have expert knowledge of one or more natural or physical sciences. They may ask a question about a phenomenon and proceed to systematically go about answering the question themselves. 8 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Who Are Technologists? A generic name for engineers or scientists in a high-tech discipline Specialists who implement technology within a field of engineering 9 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Contrast Between Engineers and Scientists Work 1. The Engineer searches the answers to similar questions, but always with an application in mind. 2. The Scientist searches the answers to questions to understand why a phenomenon occurs. 10 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Comparison Between Engineers and Scientists Ask Questions 1. The Scientists are always asking why. They are interested in increasing their knowledge base. 2. The Engineer asks similar questions, but asks because they are usually trying to solve a problem. 11 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Comparison Between Engineers and Scientists Fields and Industries Scientists and Engineers work in many of the same fields and industries, but have different roles. 12 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Comparison Between Engineers and Scientists Fields and Industries: Planets 1. Scientists study the planets in our solar system to understand them. 2. Engineers study the planets, so they can design a spacecraft to operate in the environment of that planet. 13 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Comparison Between Engineers and Scientists Fields and Industries: Neurological System 1. Scientists study the human neurological system to understand the progression of neurological diseases. 2. Engineers study the human neurological system to design artificial limbs. 14 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Comparison Between Engineers and Scientists Fields and Industries: Earthquakes 1. Scientists study the movement of tectonic plates to understand and predict earthquakes. 2. Engineers study the movement of tectonic plates to design safer buildings. 15 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Emerging Engineering Fields What is Aerospace Engineering? The primary branch of engineering concerned with the research, design, development, construction, testing, science and technology of aircraft and spacecraft. 16 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Emerging Engineering Fields What is Biological/Genetic Engineering? It is a branch of biology. It focuses on making food, animals and plants better adapted to the need of humans. It does this by tweaking genes. Genetic Engineering is when scientists can duplicate and can add on genes to the animal's chromosomes to make meat more satisfying. 17 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Emerging Engineering Fields What is Chemical Engineering? Chemical engineers are in great demand in many different kinds of industries. Of all the disciplines, chemical engineers have the highest average starting salary of $65,466. For example, pharmaceutical companies such as Novartis and Pfizer need chemical engineers to create new medicines. Food manufacturers like General Mills rely on chemical engineers to come up with new food products and packaging. 18 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Emerging Engineering Fields What is Civil Engineering? Civil engineers are everywhere and work in many areas essential to modern life. Civil engineers of the future will truly be on the move -- their skills will be needed to construct the rail beds for magnetic levitation trains, and to create the modular structures for planned human outposts on the moon and Mars. 19 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Emerging Engineering Fields What is Electrical & Computer Engineering? The branch of engineering that deals with the technology of electricity, especially the design and application of circuitry and equipment for power generation and distribution, machine control, and communications. It is a discipline that integrates several fields of electrical engineering and computer science required to develop computer systems. 20 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Emerging Engineering Fields What is Industrial Engineering? A branch of engineering which deals with the optimization of complex processes or systems like designing factories. 21 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Emerging Engineering Fields What is Materials Science & Engineering? A n interdisciplinary field which deals with the discovery and design of new materials. 22 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Emerging Engineering Fields What is Mechanical Engineering? The discipline of engineering that applies the principles of engineering, physics and materials science for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. 23 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Emerging Engineering Fields What is Nuclear Engineering? Given the security and defense issues involving nuclear energy, which include weaponry (and non-proliferation), power generation, and radioactive waste disposal, one of the biggest employers of nuclear engineers is the federal government. 24 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Emerging Engineering Fields What is Petroleum Engineering? A field of engineering concerned with the activities related to the production of hydrocarbons, which can be either crude oil or natural gas. 25 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Assignment Engineering Field Powerpoint 1. Pick an engineering field from Mr. Stilley’s bowl. 2. Go to Mr. Stilley’s website and click on the link for the engineering field you picked. 3. Make a PowerPoint presentation from the questions listed under your engineering field. 26 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.
