I. DRUG USE n A. DRUG -A substance other than food that changes the structure or function of the body and mind.

1. MEDICINES n a. PERSCRIPTION MEDICNIES CAN BE SOLD ONLY WITH A WRITTEN ORDER FROM A PHYSICIAN. n b. OVER THE COUNTER MEDICINES (OTC) ARE MEDICINES THAT ARE SAFE ENOUGH TO BE TAKEN WITHOUT A WRITTEN ORDER.

B. DRUG MISUSE n used in a way not intended

1. SIDE EFFECT n ANY EFFECT OF A MEDICINE OTHER THAN THE ONE INTEDED. n a. UPSET STOMACH n b. DROWSINESS n c. DIZZINESS

2. TOLERANCE n A condition in which a person’s body becomes used to the effect of a medicine and needs greater and greater amounts of it to be effective.

IV. NARCOTICS n PERSCRIPTION ONLY AND USED TO RELIEVE PAIN. n A. OPIUM – LIQUID FROM THE POPPY PLANT CONTAINING SUBSTANCES THAT NUMB THE BODY.

B.HEROIN n severe withdrawal symptoms n C. OXYCOTIN – INCREASED TOLERANCE TO THE DRUG.

V. STIMULANTS n DRUGS THAT SPEED UP ACTIVITY IN THE HUMAN BRAIN. SOME MILD STIMULANTS ARE: n 1. COFFEE n 2. CHOCOLATE n 3. SODA POP

A. AMPHETAMINES (SPEED) n HIGHLY ADDICTIVE, EXTREME WEIGHT LOSS, AND LOSS OF PHYSICAL STRENGTH

B. Cocaine B. Cocaine n 1. DAMAGE TO NOSE LINING AND LIVER; HEART ATTACK, SEIZURES, STROKE AND DEATH n 2. Produces a feeling of energy

IX. GETTING HELP n A. FIRST STEP IS TO RECOGNIZE YOU MAY HAVE A PROBLEM. n B. ASK FOR HELP

C. SYMPTOMS OF DRUG ABUSE n 1. TOLERANCE IS HIGHER n 2. CRAVINGS ARE MORE INTENSE n 3. LOSS OF CONTROL n 4. PHYISCAL DEPENDENCE OR WITHDRAWL SYMPTOMS

D. DETOXIFICATION n PHYISCAL PROCESS OF FREEING TH BODY OF AN ADDICTIVE SUBSTANCE.

X. CHOOSING TO BE DRUG FREE n A. USE THE STOP METHOD WHEN REFUSING DRUGS n 1. SAY NO IN A FIRM VOICE n 2. TELL WHY OR WHY NOT n 3. OFFER ALTERNATIVE IDEAS n 4. PROMPTLY LEAVE
