Extreme Environments are Susceptible to environmental damage from the development of tourism R/L

What is extreme tourism? http://blog.easytobook.com/cool-stuff/extreme-tourist-attractions-2/

Extreme environments for tourism are… Locations which are particularly difficult environments. Where the development of tourism has only recently occurred due to a niche market demand for somewhere different with physical challenges. Give some examples of Extreme environments.

What you need to know: The attractions of extreme environments for tourism. The increased demand for adventure holidays. The impact of tourism on an extreme environment. A CASE STUDY of one extreme area and the extent to which it can cope with the development of a tourist industry.

Aim: To produce a case study on the extreme Key question: What is an extreme environment or wilderness, why is tourism in these environments increasing and what are the impacts of this? Aim: To produce a case study on the extreme environment or wilderness of Zanskar in the Himalayas, to include: Location-specific information with annotated maps An overview of what an extreme environment is The attractions of this environment to people The possible impacts of tourism in the area

Where is Zanskar? (Think about different scales - local and global) What is around or near Zanskar? What adjectives could you use to describe this location? (i.e. isolated, remote, inaccessible, secluded) Describe what the different seasons might be like in this location

What an extreme environment is…

Can you think of a definition for the word 'wilderness'?

These images illustrate  the challenging environment Paul and Tanzin faced on their expedition to Zanskar down The Chadar – through a gorge deeper than the Grand Canyon in temperatures as low as -30°C. While you are looking at the images, listen to what Paul (MP3) and Tanzin (MP3) have to say about the area.

Questions: What makes Zanskar an extreme environment or wilderness? What natural, human and cultural attractions does Zanskar offer to potential adventure tourists? What impact does tourism have on Zanskar and what will the new road mean for tourism in the area?

What is the Kleenex trail?

The Future… http://vimeo.com/34493625 The route up to the base camp of Everest has been known as the Kleenex Trail due to the high amount of toilet role discarded along its route. The picture shows litter left by visitors to Everest base camp. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/education/education-news/skiing-green-channel-1236419.html#tabs-2-1 http://www.savingmounteverest.org/ http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/1254724.stm http://vimeo.com/34493625

What will be the impact of tourism? In the next 5 years – When the road is complete. In the next 10 years – When tourists are able to access Zanskar more easily. In the next 20 years – When tourism is more established. THINK and colour code : POSITIVE and NEGATIVE
