ICT is #2 in Bay Area

ICT Industry Pie Breadth of Application of ICT Knowledge and Skills ICT is Strategically Important and in Demand in Every Industry

San Francisco Bay Area ICT Industry and Employment Outlook ICT Employment Secondary Research In 2012, across all industries in the great San Francisco Bay Area, ICT Occupations: 333,229 employees (8.3% of all Bay Area employees - about 1 in 12 jobs), median annual salaries about $90,000, expecting net growth of 20,297 jobs (6.1%) from 2012 to 2015, 21,178 total replacement jobs between 2012 and 2015, 43,054 total job openings (8.2% of all job openings) between 2012 and 2015, 14,354 average annual job openings between 2012 and 2015.

San Francisco Bay Area ICT Industry and Employment Outlook ICT Employment Secondary Research Documented CCC ICT Supply: 28 CCCs 81 Departments 1,345 Faculty 140K Student Enrollments 180 Degrees 405 Academic Certificates 7,398 sections of 2,366 courses Faculty and enrollment demographics

Problem Statement Employers demand real-world experiences Students need hands-on skills development Equipment and software are expensive Difficult to get budget/funding for labs Quick obsolescence, because ICT evolves so quickly Common struggles getting admin support for labs Installation, maintenance, management & support License agreement challenges Faculty inadequately compensated for lab mgmt. Technical support for students and faculty Students need access to labs on their timeframes

Centralized Lab Expensive Hardware & Software Shared by All ●Servers ●Switches ●Software Simulations Full-time Dedicated Network Technician Shared by All ●Only supports NETLAB. Deep expertise Accessible 24 x 7 ●From school, home ●Students can sign up for 1-5 hour blocks, individually or in teams Internet

NDG Netlab+

Server appliance by Network Development Group Software tools preloaded for academic institutions to host real lab equipment, virtual machines and lab content at a location for trainees to complete labs Solution allows faculty and students to access labs remotely, so they do not have to physically be where lab equipment physically is Already used by at least 7 Bay Area colleges.

Netlab Labs Cisco Networking Academy >250 labs certifications a million students annually globally VMware IT Academy Virtualization certifications EMC Academic Alliance Data storage Industry certifications Linux Professional Institute low-cost, high value open source OS certifications CompTIA vendor neutral certifications Cybersecurity labs General IT labs Microsoft IT Academy and other content. Customization tools Used to develop and deliver other lab content. No other solution has this

Extending the CSSIA Model Moraine Valley College

Shared ICT Lab Pooling of Interest Shared investment Lower unit costs Better solution Better support Hosted at one college Available to all “Cloud service” Remotely accessible From any device 24x7 Faculty development New lab development

Physical Host The physical lab facility requires ($90K in upgrades; $250K in-kind value): Data Center Space A physical room or space in a physical room for racks and equipment Physical Security An ability to control access to Data Center space to prevent theft and unauthorized access to equipment Climate Controls An ability to control the temperature and dust in the Data Center space, to keep equipment cool and clean Reliable Electricity Consistent and ideally redundant and backed up supply of electricity needed by equipment in the Data Center space Reliable High-Speed Internet Access Adequate bandwidth to support large required access to the systems by its users Purchase and installation of new and donated equipment and software: New Equipment ($630K) “in-kind” Equipment (on loan) ($600K)

Fiscal Host Physical site modifications ($90K) New equipment purchases ($630K) Donated equipment management ($600K) Install coordination ($10K loaded) Project leadership ($30K loaded) Full-time tech support person ($110K loaded) Outreach to engage Bay Area colleges ($60K loaded) Intern support ($20K) Faculty Professional Development ($25K) New lab development ($20K) Internet and utilities ($20K) Total grant - $1million Total value with “in-kind” - $1.6million

Participating Colleges Initial pilot year participation: 25 of 28 BACCC colleges (89%) in proposal All but Cañada, Marin, West Valley Berkeley City College Cabrillo College Chabot College City College of San Francisco College of Alameda College of San Mateo Contra Costa College De Anza College Diablo Valley College Evergreen Valley College Foothill College Gavilan College Hartnell College Laney College Las Positas College Los Medanos College Merritt College Mission College Monterey Peninsula College Napa Valley College Ohlone College San Jose City College Santa Rosa Junior College Skyline College Solano College

System Capacity Purchased and donated equipment will support: at least 288 simultaneous users (9 PE (Professional Edition) Systems more than 16,000 three hour lab reservations in a 24x7 week Faculty pedagogy changes: Students self-schedule lab access Rather than everybody has to come to the physical lab at once

Projected Impact To estimate remote lab facility participation, utilization and impact, this project conducted a survey of relevant programs at BACCC colleges. 24 colleges responding 280 courses leading to industry certifications 547 sections of those courses will utilize the labs annually 11,350 students will use those labs annually
