Responsibilities as an Independent Instructor

FERPA Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act In a nutshell: You can’t talk to anyone other than the student and official university representatives about a student’s academic record, grades, performance in your class, etc. This means parents!! Students may waive their FERPA rights in MyPack. To be on the safe side, contact me to see if the student has done so. Departmental and University Regulations

Students with Disabilities In a nutshell: The University (and you as a representative thereof) is required to accommodate an otherwise qualified individual with a disability by making a reasonable modification in its services, programs, or activities. Students must register with Disabilities Services Office (DSO) which will determine what constitutes reasonable modification based on the student’s disability You will receive notice from DSO if one of your students has registered with them. That notice will outline your responsibilities. Departmental and University Regulations

University Conduct In a nutshell: Students musn’t cheat.Cheating includes plagiarism. The Office of Student Conduct (OSC) handles instances of academic misconduct by students. If you have a student who you suspect of academic misconduct, come to me and we’ll work through the steps. You must have solid proof of the misconduct. Departmental and University Regulations Outline in your syllabus your expectations regarding appropriate academic conduct and your response should those expectations not be met.

University Honor Pledge Honor Pledge: "I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this test or assignment." The syllabus may specify that the Honor Pledge be signed on each test or assignment or that it is the understanding and expectation of faculty that the student's signature on any test or assignment means that the student neither gave nor received unauthorized aid. Departmental and University Regulations

Adding Students to Your Class Administrative Tasks Department of Economics (EC courses) Poole COM (which houses the Department of Economics) does not permit instructors to approve student adds to classes or lab sections. Instruct students to go to the second floor of Nelson Hall to the Office of Undergraduate Programs (OUP) to complete a Petition to Add a course. Decisions regarding the petitions are made by OUP and communicated directly to the student.

Adding Students to Your Class Administrative Tasks Department of Agricultural Economics (ARE courses) If a student wishes to add your ARE course, and you support the request, you should instruct the student to contact Jean Weatherford, Student Services Assistant to Undergraduate Programs Coordinator for the department. Economics Graduate Program If an undergraduate student approaches you with a request to add a graduate economics course, you should refer them to the Director of Graduate Programs in Economics(me).

Administrative Tasks Ordering Textbooks If you’re a new independent instructor, consult with current faculty or other instructors who have taught the course. You do not need to recreate the wheel. Visit the NCSU Bookstore site at and follow Textbooks > Faculty > Textbook Adoptionhttp://ncsu.collegestoreonline.com/ You will create a user account with your SID number to order textbooks. You will need to know the ISBN for your chosen text.

Syllabus Design Administrative Tasks If you are a new independent instructor you should consult with a faculty member or another TA who has experience teaching the same course when you design your syllabus. Again, there is no need to recreate the wheel. Your syllabus, per University rules, must contain information regarding: You can find a template of the statement of university policies and a sample syllabus at the Moodle site. 4. Student learning outcomes/scope of course 7. Course organization and assignment schedule 5. Projected schedule of readings 6. Explanation of how grades are calculated 8. Policy for missed and late assignments 1. Instructor’s name, office address, telephone and , scheduled class time and location and office hours 2. Required text books 3. Prerequisites for the class 9. University attendance policy 10. Academic integrity policies 11. Accommodations for students with disabilities

Administrative Tasks Recording Grades Final official grades are recorded throughout the MyPack Portal. ‘For Faculty and Staff’ > ‘Manage My Students’ > ‘Faculty Center’ > ‘Class Rolls’ You will see three icons: One of the icons will reveal your class roster, one will allow you to report semester progress for the student and one will reveal your grade roster which is used to report final grades. When you enter your grades you will have the option to either Save or Post the grades you have entered. If you Save, the information you enter is maintained and you can return to the page to continue working on the grade report. At 5pm each day the grades are posted to student records but they can change if you change them. These are not official grades at this point. If you choose to Post the grades, these grades will be reported to the student immediately and will require an online Grade Change Request to make any change.
