Wanted to get reelected in 1950 in Wisconsin. Needed to find a way to get attention from the news media. He devised a plan that was a sure way to get attention from not only citizens of Wisconsin, but the whole country. Senator Joseph McCarthy

He began accusing people of being secret communists. He held special public meetings in the Congress, called “hearings,” to accuse certain Americans of being Communists and being spies for the Soviets. Sen. Joseph McCarthy

Americans became paranoid of Communism. This paranoia lead to the second Red Scare in American History. – Red Scare: a collective paranoia or fear of communism infiltrating a government. Sen. Joseph McCarty

Why didn’t Americans like Communism? Because of Joseph Stalin Americans knew he was cruel and allowed limited freedoms to the people of the Soviet Union. He was greedy, we knew he behind all the problems in Berlin. We also knew he wanted communism to spread to other countries. The Red Scare

The Rosenbergs: Two Americans were sentenced to death for selling nuclear secrets to the Soviets. This added to the fear of Communism as some of our own citizens were turning to Communism to get rid of the US. With Stalin’s death a new dictator rose in the USSR, Nikita Khrushchev. The Red Scare

McCarthy held his hearings in the Senate. The House Un- American Activities Committee (HUAC) did the same thing in the House of Representatives. McCarthyism

McCarthy and HUAC would drag people into the hearings and ask them… If you refused to answer, you were called a “Fifth Amendment Communist.” McCarthyism “Are you now, or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?”

Many citizens that were accused lost their JOBS and their reputations were destroyed, whether they were communists or not. Many could not find new jobs because they were labeled as Communist. This was known as being black listed. McCarthyism

Sen. McCarthy ruined many people’s live, even though most of his accusations were completely false. His “witch hunt” came to an end when he tried to accuse high ranking members of the US Military, and was proven wrong. McCarthyism

What is “McCarthyism?” The attacks, usually without evidence, that McCarthy and the HUAC made against people suspected of being communists in the 1940s and 1950s.

Oddly enough, there were very few communists in the US.

McCarthyism violated people’s civil liberties: freedom of speech freedom of association. It was not fair.

It helped Republicans, whose ideas were the furthest from communism. McCarthyism had a big impact on domestic politics.
