© 2006 EQUALLOGIC, INC. │ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 7 iSCSI SANs  Utilizes iSCSI (standards-based IP technology)  Provides block level storage  Leverages the large installed base of Ethernet and IP networks  Enables storage to be accessed over LAN, MAN, or WAN environments  Provides an affordable infrastructure with connectivity up to 10 times less expensive than FC SANs  Utilizes existing IP knowledge base Server GbE Switch Disk Array Tape Library

© 2006 EQUALLOGIC, INC. │ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 8 iSCSI Standard Brings Interoperability to SANs  Familiar technologies – now used together –Same SCSI commands – Over 20 years of SCSI –Same network transport – Over 30 years of IP networking –IETF RFCs: 3720, 3721, 3722, 3723 Servers (Initiators) iSCSI Storage (Targets) Ethernet Frame SCSI TCP/IP Packet  Multipath I/O  Clusters  Storage over distance  HBAs  Complete OS support  Boot from SAN  Enterprise SAN backup  Tape and disk vendors

© 2006 EQUALLOGIC, INC. │ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 9 iSCSI – What is it?  iSCSI (Internet Small Computer System Interface) specifies a way to “encapsulate” SCSI commands in a TCP/IP network connection: Explains how to extract SCSI commands and data Provides information necessary to guarantee delivery Contains “routing” information so the message can find its way through the network SCSI commands and data iSCSI Header TCP Header IP Header Gigabit Ethernet Provides Link Addressing, large frame sizes, and flow control

© 2006 EQUALLOGIC, INC. │ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 10 iSCSI in Operation  iSCSI initiators issue SCSI “commands” to request services  iSCSI target services requests “Data” to requesting initiator  iSCSI transmits and receives block storage applications over TCP/IP networks by encapsulating SCSI commands into TCP and transporting them over the network via IP Local Disk (C:) HBA or NIC Data Volume (F:) Data Volume (G:) Server iSCSI Storage iSCSI Target iSCSI Initiator Local Disk (C:) Data Volume (F:) Data Volume (G:)

© 2006 EQUALLOGIC, INC. │ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 11 Accessing a Volume Using iSCSI  To access a volume, a host needs only an industry-standard iSCSI initiator. Each major operating system supports an iSCSI initiator.  Host system access to a volume is through the group IP address and the iSCSI target for the volume.  After the initial iSCSI connection and authentication, the host is re- directed to a network connection that is optimal for performance (for example, a network interface on the member that contains the requested data).  Once connected, a volume appears as a SCSI disk that can be formatted with the operating system’s normal utilities.
