Apple Production

History o Founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in 1976 o Predominantly a manufacturer of personal computers, including the Apple II and Macintosh o Over the past few years, Apple has established a unique reputation in the consumer electronics industry

Creation of Apple I & II  The Apple I was sold as a motherboard with CPU, RAM and other basic textual video chips

Creation of Apple I & II  The Apple II was introduced on April 16, 1977 at the first West Coast Computer Faire  It was manufactured in its Plant in California and introduced on the markets on April 16, 1977  Designed to appeal to a greater market than computer hobbyists

Lisa and Macintosh  The Lisa project evolved into a project to design a powerful personal computer with a graphical user interface(GUI) that would be targeted toward business customers  The Lisa was a more advanced system than the Macintosh of that time in many respects. It had protected memory, cooperative multitasking, and a more sophisticated hard disk based operating system

Lisa and Macintosh  Moreover, it had a built-in screensaver, an advanced calculator with a paper tape and RPN, support for up to 2 megabytes (MB) of RAM, expansion slots, a numeric keypad and data corruption protection  Sales were great but the company was taxed heavily since production was in the USA

Model of Lisa and Macintosh

Attempts at Reinvention  After learning several painful lessons after introducing the bulky Macintosh Portable in 1989, Apple introduced the PowerBook in 1991, which established the modern form factor and an ergonomic layout of a laptop computer  As the products begun to gain market recognition, Apple Inc decided to manufacture more products but labor costs and taxes posed as a threat

New Apple products

Road to Success  With the high demand of Apple’s products after the introduction of its sophisticated and renowned products such as the iphone, i-mac and ipod, it decided to open subsidiaries in parts of the world where labor and taxes are cheap such as China and Taiwan to increase revenue as the company was heavily taxed in the United States

Foxconn Plants  Steve jobs contacted Foxconn, the world's largest maker of electronic components to help in the production of apple products  Each of the Foxconn plants produces 10,000 ipads every day and iphones everyday

Production in USA vs. Overseas  Average worker earns close to $2500 per month in US  Taxed heavily in USA  Average worker makes 1100 Yuan which is equivalent to $ every month in China  Little or no taxes in China

Why sales are so high?  Apple products are durable and have a lifespan of about 7-8 years  Computers to do not require installation of antiviruses  Apple products have so many useful applications such as appointment, anxiety and work-out plan apps  Apple Inc is loyal to its customers

Implications of its planned production  The companies revenue has increased by $14.1 billion ever since it opened subsidiaries in the more parts of the world  Apple Inc has gained international recognition in various continents such as Europe, Asia, South America and Africa  Ranked among top five computer brands in the world

Fact  Steve Jobs(CEO of Apple Inc) “A lot of companies have chosen to downsize, and maybe that was the right thing for them. We chose a different path. Our belief was that if we kept putting great products in front of customers, they would continue to open their wallets. Ultimately, our goal is to reduce cost and provide customer satisfaction.”
