2008 Accomplishments Draft report of Inventory of North American Monitoring Initiatives – Final report to be released in 2009 Mexican Grey Literature Synthesis report Dioxin and Furan Air Monitoring Network Continued development and promotion of Environmental/Human Bio- monitoring in Mexico (PRONAME) Assessing mercury exposure risk in the Lake Zapotlán watershed, Mexico Draft Report on the Tri-national Human Blood Biomonitoring study– final to be released in 2009

Summary: Expected Activities in 2009 Documents/Reports: –Guidance document on laboratory validation –Mercury monitoring (Lake Zapotlan, fish tissue from Mexico) –Final report on Grey literature –D/F/HCB report on Dioxin Monitoring in NA: Data available in 2010 –Lindane in milk samples: Draft of preliminary report under review Workshops: –Training in Mexico on use of Tekran monitoring equipment –Emissions modeling workshop –Biomonitoring –Sampling and chemical analysis protocols and standards development Priority projects: –Lab validation exercise –Lindane monitoring –PRONAME

PRONAME: General objective A National Program for Environmental Monitoring, Assessment and Management of Persistent Bioaccumulative and Toxic Substances Will generate information to support and improve the creation of environmental policies focused on the identification, assessment, reduction and/or elimination of PBTS from the Mexican environment

PRONAME: Scope oMonitoring in at least: THREE index or references sites not directly impacted by human activities THREE satellite sites impacted by various human activities: mining, industry, agriculture, settlements indigenous and urban PBTS include 12 POPs, metals (As, Cd, Hg, Pb), PAHs, emerging compounds Environmental media and human bio-indicators Air Monitoring Network: goal of 15 monitors across the country, including the six selected sites Include sites for environmental monitoring for dioxins and furans, and mercury.

Monitoring Sites and PRONAME Activities Indigenous population Mining sites Industry sites Urban sites Agricultural sites Index sites Start activities 2009 Start the operation of 2 PRONAME SITES: Ria Celestum (index site) and Valle del Yaqui (satellite site) Strengthen the capabilities of Mexican technicians on sampling and laboratory analysis Organize two international workshops Develop sampling and laboratory analysis protocols Secure a minimal annual budget Strengthen international cooperation Build an internet database on PBTS
