To be happy and well adjusted children need a sense of competence Reading gives them the ability to do or be something worthy of admiration I did it!

Needing to be accepted by: – Family – Friends – Neighborhood – Organization – Even gangs Books give children an outlet to be accepted.

We find substitutes when our need for love is not being met. Gives a rise to romance literature for adolescents – Example: Twilight

Children can have fun sitting in the comfort of their own rooms. They need to play and pretend so they can come back to reality refreshed. Gives children a change from their everyday lives.

Enables children to see beauty in the world They know that there are good people

Children are curious – Satisfies that curiosity Teaches them new things in different ways

Non-fiction: – Biographies – Trade books – Text books – How-to There are so many different kinds of books for anyone and everyone to read and enjoy

Can give children entertainment but do not help them learn problem solving Make it hard to identify quality vs. books that are lacking

Similar to choosing adult literature – Lively action and plot – Worthwhile theme or message – Unique and memorable character – Style that reads aloud delightfully

Teaches about self and others Broadens experiences Gives insight into living

Teaches about the world and beings on it – Giving them a respect for life – Developing a sense of beauty and decency in humans and animals Helps them with emotions – Anger – Sadness – Happiness – etc

Any book as long as they hear your voice Now is an important time for them to hear language Great time for bonding They like books concerning parent and child relations

Basic needs can be established during reading time – Cuddling – Warmth – Companionship Books can help them learn motor skills Can become aware of physical self Dr. Seuss’s The Foot Book is good to read to infants

Concept books dealing with – time (before-after) – Size – Color – Differences Nursery Rhymes Folk Tales Mother Goose Rhymes and Picture books are good to read during early childhood.

Books with characters in conflict – Children learn to take responsibility for their actions Give them a good balance between fantasy and realistic fiction Harry Potter is a good read for middle childhood

Informational books teaching new tasks Books of other children’s struggles to prove to their parents they are competent Chapter books Books with mysteries and puzzles

Reading to your child can only help them in the long run! It helps them with their basic needs. Strengthens your relationship with them Helps them in school Gives them different experiences. So……
