SHERRY LOGAN GRAPHIC NOVELS Literacy Project

Rational/Objective Rational The rational behind this inquiry is to find a genre of books that would engage struggling readers, mainly boys. Boys are not interested in most literature and they are falling behind in reading. Graphic Novels provides visuals that most students need to comprehend the text. Objectives To motivate reluctant readers, mainly boys. 1) To improve reading development among struggling readers. 1) To find diverse reading materials that would interest male readers across all content areas.

ANALYZE HOW PARTICULAR ELEMENTS OF A STORY OR DRAMA INTERACT (HOW SETTING SHAPES THE CHARACTERS OR PLOT) ANALYZE THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN INDIVIDUALS, EVENTS, AND IDEAS IN A TEXT (HOW IDEAS INFLUENCE INDIVIDUALS OR EVENTS…) DETERMINE THE MEANING OF WORDS AND PHRASES AS THEY ARE USED IN A TEXT, INCLUDING FIGURATIVE, CONNOTATIVE, AND TECHNICAL MEANINGS; ANALYZE THE IMPACT OF A SPECIFIC WORD CHOICE ON MEANING AND TONE. ANALYZE THE STRUCTURE AN AUTHOR USES TO ORGANIZE A TEXT INCLUDING HOW THE MAJOR SECTIONS CONTRIBUTE TO THE WHOLE AND TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE IDEAS. DETERMINE AN AUTHOR’S POINT OF VIEW OR PURPOSE IN A TEXT AND ANALYZE HOW THE AUTHOR DISTINGUISHES HIS OR HER POSITION FROM THAT OF OTHERS. Core Content Standards Reading Standards

Picture Books By nature, Graphic Novels are picture books, so I just went to the library and found some books that would be considered picture books and without text. Books without text are great for students to create their own story, using dialogue and thought shots of their characters. Around The World- John Coy Sardine in Outer Space- Grubert The Animal- Shaun Tan The Arrival- Shaun Tan How to be a Super Villain- Rachel Yu Howls Moving Castle Picture Book-Hayao Miyazaki Robot Dreams- Sara Varon
