GHETTO (n) legally sanctioned areas that are segregated according to ethnic minorities o (IN US) poor inner-city area where an alarming percentage of ethnic minorities live o Where 40% or more of the residents are poor (regardless of ethnicity or race) o Not simply defined for the large number of ethnic minorities o Poverty makes migrating from the ghetto harder o Developed as a result of postindustrial political, economic, and social changes FORBES

HOW GHETTOS ARE FORMED: o Minorities (especially immigrant minorities) voluntarily choose to live together. o The majority uses techniques such as violence, hostility, or legal barriers to force those minorities into certain areas. o The majority chooses to pay more than the minority in order to with their own kind. FEDERAL RESERVE

PROBLEMS: o Gangs, violence, crime, killings o “Segregated” areas/discrimination o Lack of playgrounds/public spaces o Existing public spaces are unsafe and not well kept o Overpopulation/crowding of schools o Dropping/failing out of school o No continuing education o Poor housing/building conditions o Political disempowerment
