7 Course Objective  To offer a general account of Taiwan's political development and democratization.

8 Assessment  Mid-term exam 35 %  Presentation 40 % (max. of 5 students in each group)  Attendance 25 % For each absence, one point will be deducted from the final mark as penalty. 6 week of absence will lead to an immediate fail with a final mark of 0.

For further reading, see: Rigger, Shelley, Politics in Taiwan: voting for democracy (London: Routledge, 1999) Tien, Hung-mao (ed.), Taiwan's Electoral Politics and Democratic Transition: Riding the Third Wave (Armonk, N.Y.: M.E. Sharpe, 1996)  Both books are available from the KNU library.

Democratic embryo under the authoritarian rule 5. Dissident movements 6. Socio-economic development and democracy 7. The "third wave democracy" 8. Social movement, liberalization and democratization 9. Constitutional reform and the transition of power
