Presentation transcript:

History of the International Baccalaureate® The International Baccalaureate® (IB) was founded in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1968 as a non-profit educational foundation. A group of talented, forward-thinking teachers at the International School of Geneva, with assistance from several other international schools, created the IB Diploma Programme. What started life as a single program for internationally mobile students preparing for university has today grown into three programs for students aged 3 to 19.

141 Canadian Diploma Schools IB in North America 745 US Diploma Schools 26 Georgia Diploma Schools 3 Chatham County Diploma Schools 8 Caribbean Diploma Schools IB World-wide – 3295 schools in 141 countries 58 PYP 146 MYP 141 DP 1 of 6 IBCC Schools in the USA 298 PYP 245 MYP 745 DP 1858 Total Schools

The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) The IB Middle Years Programme, for students aged 11 to 16, provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and become critical and reflective thinkers.

The Curriculum The program consists of eight subject groups: 1.Language and Literature (English and Composition) 2.Language Acquisition (Spanish, Chinese, French, Arabic, etc.) 3.Individuals and Societies 4.Sciences 5.Mathematics 6.Arts 7.Physical and Health Education 8.Design (Computer and Technology) During the 10 th grade students are to complete a personal project, which allows them to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have developed. This project has an innumerable range of topics and formats, and it allows the student to research what he/she is truly passionate about.

MYP & AP Our 9 th grade IB hopefuls are currently taking AP Human Geography and our 10 graders are taking AP Government & Politics.

Pop Quiz! Q: What does a population pyramid show? A: The percentage of males and females in a country broken down by age Q: How is McDonald’s a pop culture icon that still honors certain folk customs? A: McDonald’s will serve the local cuisine or have separate lines for men and women (as in certain Middle Eastern countries.

What do we study in AP Human Geography? Population and migration trends Development and evolution of languages Political conflicts Urban land use How maps lie World food production Economic growth Ethnicity and religion

Pop Quiz! Q: What determines the number of electoral votes a state gets? A: # of reps. in the House of Representatives + # of Senators Georgia-> 14+2= 16 Q: What group of people is the most likely to vote? A: People ages 65-85

What do we study in AP Government & Politics? Interest groups & public opinion Campaigns Public policy Foreign policy Civil rights and liberties Taxes and spending Political parties A Public Policy Polling (PPP) survey shows that Congress is less popular than root canals, cockroaches, lice, and Genghis Khan. However, Congress is more popular than the ebola virus, meth labs, North Korea, and the Kardashians.

AP or IB, that is the question… High rigor Quality point adjustment to GPA College level coursework/ curriculum Potential college credit College recognition of challenge Classes stand alone Externally assessed Grading scale is a “passing” score Large selection of classes Can pick and choose subjects to take by preference Interdisciplinary Internally and externally assessed Grading scale is a “passing” score Specific curriculum requirements across the disciplines Develops whole student (CAS, EE, TOK)

Contents: What does the Diploma Programme curriculum contain? The curriculum contains six subject groups and a core of three parts.  three subjects at higher level (240 hours each).  three subjects at standard level (150 hours each).  all three parts of the core. The IB Learner Profile and the core are central to the philosophy of the Diploma Programme. Students study concurrently:

CAS (Creativity Action & Service) Approximately 150 documented hours of student interaction with the community Extended Essay word research paper on a topic of the students choice Theory of Knowledge Discussion oriented class that ties all the IB subject matter together with questions and arguments about “what is knowledge”? Diploma CORE

 Graded internally by the classroom teacher  Samples sent worldwide to IB examiners for moderation of scores Some Oral Some Written Some Visual Some Product Some Lab Internal Assessment IB Assessments  Timed, standardized IB exams given off campus in May  All exams sent world-wide to IB Examiners for external grading  Scores communicated to school and students in July after the exams External Assessment

What are the advantages of the IB Program for your child?

2) The IB Programme is respected in the US and abroad as the most challenging high school curriculum a student can undertake

Duke Admissions Chair: “I consider a full IB Diploma Program to be the most rigorous high school program a student can pursue.”

3) Students can tailor their IB program to meet their own needs and interests

4) Students in IB are successful in standardized testing Every student in the IB class of 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 passed all sections of the Georgia High School Graduation Test on their first attempt
