COMMON CORE Standards and Strategies Flip Chart Overview of CCS Flip Chart Introduction Benefits Layout and Organization Suggestions for Use

What are the Common Core Standards? The Common Core Standards define the rigorous skills and knowledge in English Language Arts and Mathematics that K-12 students need to master. These standards are based on College and Career Readiness Standards and are intended to prepare students to become competitive in the global marketplace.

What guidelines were followed in the development of the CCS? The Standards must: Be focused and coherent Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards Be internationally benchmarked so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society Be based on evidence and research

Why are the Common Core Standards important? Currently, students in each state are learning at different levels and with different expectations. All students must be prepared to compete with not only their American peers in the next state, but with students from around the world.

Why should the Common Core Standards be taught? American students are falling behind academically when compared to students from other countries. International comparisons show that: In 2003, the United States ranked 15th in Reading. In 2003, the United States ranked 24th in problem solving. In 2006, the United States ranked 25th in Mathematics. In 2006, the United States ranked 21st in Science .

Why should the Common Core Standards be taught? Teaching the Standards ensures that American students receive a world-class education that prepares them with the skills and knowledge to compete in the 21st century. The Standards are aligned to the College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards and therefore prepare students to enter college or the workplace.

The Promise of the Standards These Standards are not intended to be new names for old ways of doing business. They are a call to take the next step. It is time for states to work together to build on lessons learned from two decades of standards based reforms. It is time to recognize that standards are not just promises to our children, but promises we intend to keep. Taken from the Common Core State Standards Initiative website at www.corestandards.com
