What Is Breast Cancer?  The Most Common Cancer in the UK.  Also Known as Mammacarcinoma.  It can be of several types; however split into two major types:  Invasive- Ability to Spread outside Ducts and lobules  Non-Invasive- Does not have the ability to spread- Localized.

Healthy vs. Cancerous Breast

The Facts!  The number of people diagnosed with Breast Cancer is increasing, however survival rates are getting better!  The biggest risk factor after gender is age. 80% of breast cancers occur in women aged 50 and over.  Breast cancer also affects men, but rarely. Around 400 cases per year.

The Stats!  Every Year, nearly 55,000 people are diagnosed! That’s the equivalent to 150 per day, or 1 person every 10 minutes.  1 in 8 women in the UK will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.  Almost 12,000 people die every year from Breast cancer.  There are estimated 550,000 people living in the UK who have been diagnosed.  Adults between ages 25-49, breast cancer accounts for 45% of all female cancers.

Breast Cancer Statistics Table

Prevention of Breast Cancer  Tamoxifen is a drug used to treat breast cancer for the past 35 years.  In 2013 Cancer Research UK gathered all results of tests to determine how effective these drugs were, they confirmed- Tamoxifen can lower your risk of breast cancer if the patient is of HIGH RISK. The trials and tests lasted 5 Years before assessment.

Problems with Prevention  Tamoxifen has some rather extreme side effects!  Strokes  Blood Clots  Womb Cancer Incidence increases!  Asprin is used as a precaution by many women- however this can also have it’s toll! Stomach Ulceration etc.
