How does solid ink printing work? Molten ink is sprayed onto oiled drum forming entire image Ink is transferred to paper under pressure Paper exits printer where ink instantly hardens The ink is melted at temperature close to the boiling point of water over 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Then the drum starts to spin over 300 revolutions per minute while a microscopic layer of oil is applied. The print head shoots ink drops at a rate of 40 million drops per second to create the image on the drum. Then with over 700 pounds of force, the ink is pressed into the paper transferring the ink from the drum to the paper. The ink cools and solidifies immediately leaving the image bonded to the paper.
