How can I help teachers through my library? Non-Fiction Text Grade 5 has two non-fiction units: “Space”, which includes Black Hole is not a Hole by Carolyn DeCristofano and Black Holes by Ker Than. “Inventions” include the titles Girls think of Everything: Stories of Ingenious Inventions by Women by Catherine Thimmesh, and Toys! Amazing Stories Behind Some Great Inventions by Don Wulffson. Theme 1: Space (5.RI.5.1, 5.RI.5.2, 5.RI.5.3, 5.RI.5.4, 5.RI.5.5, 5.RI.5.6, 5.RI.5.8, 5.RI.5.9) Black Hole is not a Hole by Carolyn DeCristofano (Lexile 900) (new title) Black Holes by Ker Than (Lexile 940) (new title)

Paired titles and CCSS corelations This set of paired texts explores black holes in space. Additional features include charts, diagrams, space photographs, a bibliography, index, glossary, timeline, additional resources and web sites. They meet a number of 5 th grade information text standards. In particular Literacy.RI.5.4, 5 and 6 standards are met through comparing and contrasting the overall structure of concepts or information in two or more texts, the opportunity to analyze multiple accounts of the same topic, and standard RI.5.9 which integrates information from several texts on the same topic. Key Ideas and Details: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.5.2CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.5.2 Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details; summarize the text.
