Tuesday, November 1st

 Today, I will summarize and evaluate information from historical documents by writing down the Gist and supporting details for each text. (1b)

 In your notebook, write down what you think the three worst forms of torture during the Holocaust were. Be sure to describe each form of torture.

 On lined paper (yes, you will turn this in), write “Part 1” and Freezing/Hypothermia

 Follow along as I read the first of two sections under Part 1 ◦ Freezing/Hypothermia

Ice Baths in Nazi Concentration Camps

 Summarize the material ◦ To mimic the cold conditions the German Army would face while fighting on the Eastern Front, Jews were put into icy baths or forced to stand naked in sub-zero temperatures. Write this down!

 Select a detail/quote from the text ◦ “The experiments were conducted on men to simulate the conditions other armies suffered on the Eastern Front.” Write this down!

 Follow along as I read the second of two sections under Part 1 ◦ Sea-Water Experiments

Sea water being injected into a prisoner

 Summarize the material ◦ Victims were not given food or water. Instead, they only received chemically processed sea water. This caused suffering and bodily harm to the victims. Write this down!

 Select a detail/quote from the text ◦ “The victims were deprived of all food and given only chemically processed sea water.” Write this down!

 Follow along as I read Part 2. Be prepared to summarize the information in these sections with a partner

Mustard Gas burns

 With your partner, summarize the material from the section on Mustard Gas.  Next, select a detail from the information.  Be prepared to share with the class.

Nazi dogs with poisonous teeth

 Summarize the information under the section titled “Experiments with Poison.”  Then, select a detail from the text.

Nazi doctors sliced open the leg of Ravensbruck survivor Jadwiga Dzido (shown here) and deliberately infected the wound with bacteria, dirt, and glass slivers to simulate a battlefield injury. They then treated the wound with sulfanilamide drugs.
