Divertcular Disease of the Colon Diverticulosis= out-pouching of the colonic diverticula through the muscularis mucosa layer. Often symptomless. Risk factors:aging low fiber diets Diverticulitis= localized inflammation and infection near the diverticula. Sx:diarrhea alternating with constipation, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, fever, flatus

Dietary Advice?Complete 180˚ Now recommend high fiber, rather than low fiber High fiber? Emphasize plant foods: fruits vegetables, whole grains, legumes. Helps maintain proper GI function. Diverticular disease is NOT associated with malabsorption.

Sx:diarrhea, rectal bleeding cramping, abdominal pain Anorexia Weight Loss Massive loss of fluid and electrolytes Malabsorption Treat with palliative medications High kcal, high protein diet (lo fat if malabsor.)

Low Fiber, Bland diets to: Promote healing of stoma Prevent obstructions Prevent GI discomfort Promote fluid intake because absorption has Avoid foods that promote gas formation/flatus Thickening foods can help control diarrhea.
