WHAT CAN I EXPECT NEXT YEAR?  Holloway School Hours: 7:57 AM – 3:00 PM  Number of Lunches: 3 (A, B, C)  A different teacher for every class  Passing Periods – you are now on your own  Dress Code is strictly enforced  Lockers are available upon request  Assigned text books may be left at home for homework; class sets available at school

WHAT WILL MY SCHEDULE LOOK LIKE?  Number of Class Periods: 7  Number of Core Classes: 5  Reading  Language Arts  Math  Science  History  Everyone takes Physical Education (PE) every day - do NOT dress out  Everyone chooses one elective course

WHAT ARE MY ELECTIVE CHOICES? ART BEGINNER BAND CHOIR COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

ART  Learn basic art concepts  Color wheel  Pen strokes  Free art  Study artists and their works  Construct various projects throughout the year  May require additional supplies  Enrollment limited to 30  First-Come-First-Served Assignment (based on date choice form is returned)

BEGINNER BAND  A PREREQUISITE FOR HIGHER LEVELS OF BAND (JR HIGH/ HIGH SCHOOL)  Only offered in 6 th grade  Learn how to play an instrument  Learn how to read music  Only a few instruments are furnished so you may be responsible for providing your own instrument  Must indicate Band as an elective choice on your sheet, even if you have already auditioned for an instrument

CHOIR  Sing, Sing, Sing!!  Learn how to read music  Coordinate choreography for performances  Perform in the school and community  Performances outside of school may be required

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS  Basic computer orientation  Keyboarding  Word Processing  PowerPoint  Microsoft Office  Other related equipment  Digital Camera  Scanner  Printer  Enrollment limited to 26  First-Come-First-Served Assignment (based on date choice form is returned)

IMPROVEMENT CLASSES Math Improvement  Intensive instruction in math  Includes computer tutorial programs  Taken in addition to regular math class Reading Improvement  Intensive reading program  Uses various strategies  READ 180  Taken in addition to regular reading class Students who have low scores on a Math and/or Reading STAAR test, end-of-year RTI Universal Screener, and/or earned a low final grade in 5 th grade Math and/or Reading may be required to take an improvement class in place of an elective unless the chosen elective is Band. Then the improvement class will take the place of PE. Improvement classes are assigned by Holloway Administration.

ACCELERATED ACADEMIC PROGRAM An introduction to Pre-AP and AP courses in junior high and high school

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM AAP?  Rapid-paced instructional setting  Extremely high expectations for student behavior and academic performance  Additional independent work  Reading  Research Papers  Projects  Presentations  Additional 30 minutes of homework every night for each Honors class taken  Homework over the weekend  Regular daily class attendance is crucial (Note: In view of the increased challenge of the classwork, students enrolled in an AAP class may transfer to an “on level” class at the END OF THE FIRST SIX WEEKS and at the END OF THE FIRST SEMESTER ONLY)

WHICH AAP COURSES ARE OFFERED?  Reading Honors  Language Arts Honors  Math Honors  Science Honors  History Honors Students may take only one Honors class or up to all five Honors courses offered IF they meet the requirements for those classes.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO TAKE AN HONOR CLASS?  Must have an 85 final average in each subject requested at the end of 5 th grade  Must pass the FIRST administration of the 5 th grade STAAR test in the corresponding subject area:  Reading Honors – Reading STAAR  Language Arts Honors – Reading STAAR  Math Honors – Math STAAR  Science Honors – Science STAAR  History Honors – Reading STAAR

HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR AN HONORS CLASS?  Complete the Advanced Academic Program Request Form (yellow sheet)  Student Name  Student Signature  Parent Signature  Date  Requested Honors Course(s)  Return the form to your teacher no later than Friday May 15 th. (Note: Simply completing and returning the form will not guarantee placement in the Honors classes requested. You must still meet eligibility criteria)

STUDENT COUNCIL  Students are elected in October  Requirements Include:  Passing Average  Satisfactory Citizenship  No In School Suspension  Attend after school meetings  Participate in projects/fundraisers  Projects include:  Project Joy Canned Food Drive  Angel Tree  O’Malley Alley Cat Organization  Valentines for Oakbrook Nursing Home

NATIONAL ELEMENTARY HONOR SOCIETY  Students must qualify with a core course grade average of 90% or better  Student must have satisfactory or above citizenship marks  Projects include:  Blessing Bags  Teacher thank-you cards  Chemo bags  Christmas cards for nursing home

UIL ACADEMIC TEAMS  Students try out for teams in late September  Academic Teams Include:  Ready Writing  Social Studies  Music Memory  Listening  Maps, Graphs, and Charts  Dictionary  Number Sense  Art  Spelling  Science  Calculators  Prose/Poetry
