Lesson Plan Name: Is it even or odd? Objective: Given a number less than 100, determine if it is odd or even. PA State Standard: 2.1.3F Apply number patterns (even and odd) and compare values of numbers… Subject Area: Math Grade Level: 1 Materials List: Smart Board, LCD projector, Computer (with internet connection), Notebook Software 10, Koosh ball, Finger pointer, Feather duster, Even/Odd response paddles (Popsicle stick and cardstock), Even Steven and Odd Todd book. Description: To review students’ understanding of the concept of odd and even from the math book, students will engage in this follow-up lesson on the Smart Board. (This lesson has been developed in Notebook Software 10.) See entire PowerPoint presentation for full description details. Introduction: Watching video clip (song) Review: Slide 1 of Smart Board lesson Guided Practice: Slide 2 of Smart Board lesson along with odd/even response paddles and feather duster Independent Practice (per student): (Remaining slides of the Smart Board lesson) Students are selected by the roll of a virtual die. The student selects his/her name with the pointer. The student is linked to his/her practice page. He/She responds with the koosh ball. All students are given an independent practice activity page. Conclusion: Read Even Steven and Odd Todd book.

This first screen (of the Smart Board Notebook lesson) is to review even and odd numbers. Students take turns moving the numbers to the correct location on the lines. Introduction: Watch the Odd Todd and Even Steven – Math Song on the Waterford Institute website. es/demos_oddeven.jsp es/demos_oddeven.jsp

Guided Practice: The next screen is for the class to choose whether the number is even or odd. Each child has a paddle with even on one side and odd on the other side. Each student is to flip his/her paddle to the correct response. After all students have made their selections, one child comes up with a feather duster to tap the blue box next to the number to reveal the correct answer. odd even Reverse side

Independent Practice (per student): One virtual cube is rolled at a time to determine whose turn it is to answer. (No picture is repeated, so everyone gets a turn. ) Each student is selected by a roll of a die. When a child’s picture appears on the die, then it is his/her turn to tap his/her name with the pointer to advance to the slide with his/her math problem. (Math problems can be differentiate to each child’s instructional level.)

Correct responseIncorrect response You did it! Sorry, try again! That child’s slide will appear. Each slide includes a number with an odd box and even box. The student will determine whether the number is even or odd. The student throws a koosh ball at the screen to hit the correct response. The koosh ball will make contact with the Smart Board to advance the slide to reveal a correct or incorrect response slide. The “Sorry, try it again!” slide will take the student back to that same problem slide to solve the problem again. links to same problem to do again (Animated dancing frog)

Once the child reaches the “You did it” screen, the arrow links back to the page with the dice for the next child’s turn. As a conclusion to this lesson, read the story Even Steven and Odd Todd by Kathryn Cristaldi.
