N5 – WP1: Status and perspectives G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze/Urbino H.Grote – AEI Hannover

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino ILIAS N5 – GWA network Objectives –Increase the level of EU coordination –Maximise return on large investments already made –Enhance the performance of existing detectors –Prepare the future of this discipline in Europe –Improve the exchange of infos on subjects of common interest –Foster the development of common methodologies for joint observations Working groups: –WG1: antenna commissioning and characterization –WG2: joint operations of antennas, network data analysis –WG3: a european strategy for future antennas

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino WG1 Objectives –To speed up the commissioning and the characterization of Virgo and GEO by means of a deeper collaboration between the two teams –To develop common methods of characterization of interferometric GW detectors to be applied to Virgo and GEO –To provide inputs for establishing priorities for short term improvements of the existing interferometric detectors on the base of the Virgo and GEO characterization Budget for travels: 30 keuro/year from 2004 to 2007

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino From the1 st EB meeting minutes Main statement: “We must create a community that represents our activity…” About the meetings: –Members of WG1 must meet 4 times/year at the experimental sites. –Meetings are open to all interested persons belonging to the network. –They have to meet twice before August (to be confirmed by the chairmen) Appointed people have access to the detectors data They have to identify what software tools are missing to perform their job

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino The group S.Hild H.Grote (co-chairman) H.Lueck J.Smith M.Barsuglia A.Freise P.La Penna G.Losurdo (co-chairman) L.Taffarello M.Visco Not a closed group: we can invite other people involved in WG1 topics to partecipate GEO600 Virgo Bars

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino WG1: 4-years execution plan MILESTONESDELIVERABLES YEAR 1 Working group set-up GEO/Virgo noise sources comparison Annual report YEAR 2 GEO/Virgo joint noise characterization Development of common characterization algorithms Annual report Recommandations report for short term improvements YEAR 3 GEO/Virgo joint noise characterization Implementation of common characterization algorithms Annual report YEAR 4 GEO/Virgo joint noise characterization Annual report Recommandations report for short term improvements

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino 1 st year milestones Working group set up –1st meeting: Cascina, July 2004 –2nd meeting: Hannover, September 2004 –3rd meeting: January, TBD Web page set up (meeting agendas, minutes and presentations available) GEO/Virgo noise sources comparison, work started: –Comparing detector subsystems –Comparing detector operation –Comparing tools for data analysis –Comparing noise characterization methods

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino WG1 first meetings goals Keep in touch, know each other Understand where we are and where we are going: talks on detector status Develop a common language: talks on single detector subsystems of commissioning topics, demos of detector operation Noise characterization: talks on noise analysis methods and on data tools

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino 1 st meeting agenda July 7th Introduction (G.Losurdo) Status of the detectors –Geo (H.Lueck) –Virgo (A.Freise) –Bars (M.Visco, L.Taffarello) Commissioning/Subsystems Locking/Control –Geo (H.Grote) –Virgo (M.Barsuglia) July 8th Commissioning/Noise –Geo (J.Smith) –Virgo (P.La Penna) –Bars (M.Visco, L.Taffarello) General discussion Social lunch (with WG3)

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino 2 nd meeting agenda September 23rd Commissioning progress –Geo (H.Lueck) –Virgo (P. La Penna) Commissioning/Subsystems –Virgo suspension control (G.Losurdo) –GEO detector operation (H.Grote) –GEO detector operation demo on site (GEO team) Social event: visit to the nearby animal farm Commissioning/Noise Data tools and exchange –Geo (S.Hild) –Virgo (A.Freise) September 24th Commissioning/Noise Noise analysis –Geo (J.Smith) –Bars (M.Visco)

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino First achievements All the appointed group members attended both meetings, other participants present (everybody happy to be there) The discussion has been very deep and partecipated, with plenty of questions People start understanding similarities/differences in the commissioning approaches There is a strong will of collaboration and a widely open attitude A first test of data exchange has been done…

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino GEO data read with Virgo dataDisplay A.Freise

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino Analogous Virgo channels: notice how different are the names… A.Freise

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino Open “problems”: GEO-Virgo asymmetries We must create a common “dictionary”/language At the moment the meaning of commissioning is different for the two groups: –Virgo is working for making the detector fully operative –GEO is in the phase of noise charaterization Full locking of Virgo reduces the “gap” The Virgo commissioning group is larger and the organization is different

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino Actions for the next future Increase the frequency of the meetings (using video/audio-conference) Invite non-appointed people to give talks Participate to “commissioning meetings” of the two detectors: getting more involved into the commissioning life of the others Share progressively the noise puzzles, write common internal reports Exchange students for short periods

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino Noise Projections J.Smith’s talk, 1 st meeting

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino Effect of the vacuum pump Between 13h22 (UTC) and 14h40, all pumps are progressively switched off At 13h59, IB pump switched off ZOOM Between 14h40 and 15h00, original conditions are restored P.La Penna’s talk, 1 st meeting

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino GAUSSIANITY EXPLORER NAUTILUS 1 day of data on July 2004 M.Visco’s talk, 1 st meeting

ILIAS-GW N5 JRA – Paris, Nov 6th, 2004 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino Conclusive remarks A group of people deeply involved in GW detector commissioning has been set up The group can be an open and permanent workshop for collaborative noise characterization in Virgo and GEO detectors There is a lot that we can learn from each other and there is an very good spirit of collaboration
