Where are you, Argentina? Argentina is located in South America. It is the second largest country on the continent. The capital of Argentina is Buenos Aires. The population of Argentina as of July, 2009 is 40,913,584 people. Buenos Aires

Himno Nacional Argentino The flag of Argentina consists of three stripes, two blue and one white. The flag also has a yellow sun in the middle. It is said that the white symbolizes peace and honesty, while blue symbolizes vigilance, perseverance, and loyalty. The sun, known as the Sun of May, represents General Belgrano when he looked into the sky just before the Battle of Parana.

Sweet Freedom! Argentina gained its independence from Spain on July 9, The Argentine War of independence lasted from 1810 until The war was fought between the Argentines and the Spanish Monarchy.

Something of Significance A very historic moment in Argentina was the great depression in the early 1930’s. After many great years of prosperity Argentina’s economy suffered a great decline. This time period was known as the “Infamous Decade”.

Dia de las Malvinas Also known as Malvinas Day, this holiday remembers the day that the Argentine military invaded the Falklands Islands. The Argentines commemorate their defeat after a three week war with Britain. Dia de las Malvinas is on April 2 every year.

Obelisco In the heart of Buenos Aires sits a 67.5 meter obelisk. It is the cultural hot spot for both locals and tourists.

Waterfalls of Iguazú River These natural waterfalls are a beautiful part of Argentina. There are over 275 single waterfalls that run off of the Iguazú river. It is quite an amazing spectacle that’s draws tourists from all around.

Diego Maradona Maradona is considered to be one of the greatest soccer (or football) players of all time. He has won the world cup, many national cups, and many individual honors such as best player at the world cup, FIFA goal of the century, and last but not least FIFA player of the century.

Isabel Perón Isabel was the first woman to ever be elected as president not just in Argentina, but in the whole world. However, Isabel's presidency was over after two short years for she was charged with many crimes linked to abuse of human rights.

Food!!! Argentina has a world-wide reputation for incredible steak typically cooked on a parrilla or open grill. Argentinean cooking is strongly influenced by Europe. Their food is similar to the food you would find in places like Italy, France, and Spain. Some of their dishes include; bife de chorizo, pizza, pasta, empanadas, and provaleta. Surprisingly, for a country with 3100 miles of coastline, Argentines don’t eat much fish
