Task 1 Texts EN, FR, DE, ES, PL, EL, IT, RO European Commission: Green paper on bio- preparedness - COM(2007) 399 [section 2] ZH, RU, EN, AR UN Security Council: Mission Report (East Timor) – S/2007/711 [paras 1-4]

Task 1 Instructions Find the source text in your chosen language. Ignoring the existing translation in your target language, how much background research would you need to do to produce a translation? What resources would you use for your research? Compare the two texts (English versions) for the task: how do they differ in terms of research required for doing a translation? Use the IATE and UNTerm banks to find equivalents of technical terms in the texts in your languages.

Task 2 (EU) Study last week’s text (updated versions eg. 2007), searching for EEC Council: Regulation no. 1 determining the languages to be used by the European Economic Community Compare different language versions. Do they transmit the same meaning (as ‘equally valid’ texts)? Summarize the EU language policy.

Task 2 (UN) Study last week’s text on multilingualism which you have found using the Official Document System UN Compare different language versions. Do they convey the same meaning (as ‘equal versions’)? Summarize the UN policy on multilingualism.

Task 3 (UN) Look at Reports in the UN Document section: Write a report in English on the topic you have researched this week. Your partner will translate your report.

Task 3 (EU) Look at examples of Green Papers on eur- lex site: Write a green paper in English on the topic you have researched this week. Your partner will translate your green paper.
