What is Phelophepa? The Phelophepa Health Train is a train that brings health and hope to thousands of rural South Africans in need of access to health care facilities. Phelophepa Health Train: A CASE STUDY What’s in a name.. ‘Phelophepa’ combines elements of Sotho and Tswana and, roughly translated, means ‘good, clean health’ – which is exactly what this travelling health clinic provides. The goal It is to supplement and support existing facilities to make sure the residents can continue benefitting from quality healthcare once the train has departed. Services on-board Phelophepa trains: Health clinic: Focuses on quality primary patient healthcare and health education, offers treatment for common illnesses and ailments, diabetes and cancer screening. Dental clinic: Equipped to perform teeth cleaning, extractions and restorations, also has a digital x-ray unit for intra-oral radiography of the mouth. The clinic also provides dental education services. Eye clinic: Examination and treatment of patients’ eyes and sight, prescription spectacles are produced in the laboratory on the train and a range of ready-made reader are also available. The clinic provides visual screening and education services. Phelophepa Health Train - Services

Educational clinic: Trains 16 volunteers from each community in preventative healthcare at each of the stations on route. Psychology clinic: Provides valuable link to local community psychologists, social workers and other professionals for follow-up assistance. Pharmacy: Provides up to schedule 4 medication Phelophepa Health Train - Services

Outreach Programme Led by the medical clinicians comprising a dental infection control nurse; optometrist, and a chief professional nurse, outreach teams travel to local schools, prisons, early childhood development centres and older persons facilities communities in the surrounding areas. It is emphatic on healthcare education as this also lies at the very heart of Phelophepa’s services. Health education, including a focus on mental health equips people living in remote communities with important knowledge that will help them correctly prevent and identify disease symptoms. It also equips them with knowledge of how to live a healthy lifestyle to improve quality of life, how to take their medication correctly and prevention of common ailments and conditions. In many SA rural communities, there is often only a single doctor for every people. The world’s first primary healthcare hospital on wheels; 20 full-time staff, 40 volunteers; patients annually; More than community members are employed; The trains have supplied primary healthcare to over 4 MILLION people since Close to 1120 volunteers, specially selected by their communities, are educated on general health each year.
