What is it and why does it matter? Work ethic . What is it and why does it matter?

Work Ethic Work ethic is a value based on: hard work and diligence Integrity Respect for authority Reliability Workers exhibiting a good work ethic would be selected for better positions, more responsibility and ultimately promotion.

WORK ETHIC IS DEFINED BY WHAT YOU ARE WILLING TO DO WHEN NO ONE IS WATCHING

Core values of the workplace Being accountable. Making a difference. Focusing on detail. Delivering quality. Being completely honest. Keeping promises. Being reliable. Being positive. Meeting deadlines. Helping others. Being a great team member. Respecting company policy and rules, and respecting others. Showing tolerance.

Don’t like the minimum wage? If you’ve got: Minimum skills Minimum education Minimum motivation and provide Minimum contribution to the work place Why should someone pay you more than the minimum wage?

Broad characteristics of the last 3 Generations Baby Boomers (born between 1946 – 1964). The Baby Boomer work ethic is characterised by dedication, loyalty and a willingness to stay in the same job for a long time Generation X (born between 1965 – 1981). Gen X thrives on diversity, challenge, responsibility, honesty and creative input, compared to the boomers’ preference for a more rigid, work-centric approach. Gen Y (born between 1982 – 2000). With their ‘what’s in it for me?’ attitude, Gen Y focuses on entitlements, rewards and promotions , which has often led other generations to see them as arrogant, selfish, lazy and unethical.. E. Collier (2011) Workplace Warfare

So what about Gen Z ? Set to occupy roughly 10 per cent of the workforce by 2020 Due to their penchant for multi-tasking with gadgets they are more susceptible to distraction. Less developed social skills due to significant increase in online social life Predicted to be leaders in online work collaboration

Are today’s youth really more materialistic and less motivated than past generations? Y E S A survey by Twenge and Kasser examines the materialistic values of three generations with questions focused on the perceived importance of having a lot of money and material goods, as well as the willingness to work hard. “Compared to previous generations, recent high school graduates are more likely to want lots of money and nice things, but less likely to say they’re willing to work hard to earn them,” Twenge, 2013. There exists a ‘fantasy gap’ between the desire for wealth and the desire to work

When family life and economic conditions are unstable, youth may place a strong priority on money and possessions. Kasser 2013

Work Ethic Wielding a strong work ethic is ultimately a matter of becoming an action-oriented person
