Fostering creativity by sharing case-studies and examples Practical Hands-on- activity. Experiential learning in the psychomotor domain. Activity Introductory presentation - slides outlining the content, context and current thinking. Activity 1 - How to record a podcast Participants split into groups – facilitated by BLU team members. Using a digital voice recorder (DVR), each group will record a discussion on why they might use podcasting, including benefits and challenges. Group Discussion on Benefits and challenges. Activity 2 – How to upload a podcast A BLU Team member talks through the “Quick guide to podcasting” pictorial handout. Facilitated by the BLU team members, the groups will upload the podcasts to the resource library of the “Best Practice Website”. Facilitated by the BLU team members, groups will go on to follow the handout to create audio files in the “podcasting folder” on the “Best Practice Website” – using teaching resources. Brief presentation on “subscribing”. Case studies- Some examples of podcasts – different styles, drawn from different disciplines. Notify participants that they can borrow a DVR by contacting the Blended Learning Unit. Questions from the participants and evaluation. Practical Hands-on-activity. Experiential learning in the psychomotor domain. Constructivist learning through active discussion and collaboration. Promoting Podcasting at the University of Hertfordshire A Blended Learning Unit Staff Development Workshop Alan Hilliard – Aim: Through dialogue, discussion and practical activities, this 2 hour workshop aims to provide a hands-on experience for participants to make and upload podcasts to StudyNet. Discussions of the benefits and challenges of podcasts and the variety of ways in which podcasts can be used to support learning and teaching will be included, illustrated by a number of examples and case studies drawn from different disciplines. Explanation of definitions and terminology, history and development, pedagogical applications for teaching and learning Explanation of how subscribing works to enable syncing of MP3 players. Provide participants with the equipment to actively explore and experiment with podcasts Structure of the Workshop Participant comment: “The practical hands-on activity is helpful” Participants comments: “Thought Provoking”. “Provided some good new thinking”. Facilitated Discussion. Construction of knowledge and comprehension through shared dialogue and ideas. Participants comments: “Fresh ideas on uses”. “Good ideas provided”. “Conversations generated some very practical ideas for using podcasts”. Evaluation: The workshop was evaluated by use of a brief questionnaire. Likert scales were used to indicate how useful participants rated individual sections of the workshop. Content, Context and Discussing the benefits and Uploading a Podcast Case Studies Current Thinking challenges of Podcasting Participants comments: “Fantastic intro to podcasting”. “Useful and informative. Excellent overall. Good length. Good information and delivery”.
