Divided Kingdom

Deuteronomy 18:21-22 You may say in your heart, 'How will we know the word which the LORD has not spoken? When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.

In Review At Solomon’s death the nation of Israel is divided – Israel in the north, Judah in the south The nation of Israel never turns to the LORD – each king is wicked. Some of the rulers of Judah seek the LORD, but consistently, when that king dies, the people turn to idols. At times, both nations commit abominable acts with false gods. Israel is attacked and defeated by the Assyrian Empire – their kingdom ends. Judah survives the Assyrian attack by turning to the LORD through king Hezekiah. Manasseh, Hezekiah’s son, is very wicked, more than any before or after him. Josiah finds book of the law and enacts major reform in all of Judah. Passover is celebrated again Josiah dies, sons turn back to idols Babylon attacks Judah and eventually will defeat them – leading to their exile/deportation. At this time, temple and Jerusalem destroyed All this time the prophets have been speaking – calling the people to return to the LORD and speaking of what will come in the future for those who do or do not.
