Judah Jerusalem. Israel Sell the righteous. Sell the needy. Trample the poor. Turn on the afflicted. Sexual sin. Hold pledged coat. Excess drink. Violate Nazirites and prophets. Accountable to God’s Revealed Old Covenantal Law. Deut. 6:1-9

How accountable, with post knowledge of Jesus Christ, are we? Accountable to God’s Revealed New Covenantal Law. Matt. 22:33

Chpt 2. From the Pagan nations… now to God’s covenant people. Judah/Israel had the testimony of YHWH in the covenant. They knew better.

Amos 2: Thus says the LORD: “For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals— 7 those who trample the head of the poor into the dust of the earth and turn aside the way of the afflicted; a man and his father go in to the same girl, so that my holy name is profaned; 8 they lay themselves down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge, and in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined. 9 “Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars and who was as strong as the oaks; I destroyed his fruit above and his roots beneath. 10 Also it was I who brought you up out of the land of Egypt and led you forty years in the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite. 11 And I raised up some of your sons for prophets, and some of your young men for Nazirites. Is it not indeed so, O people of Israel?” declares the LORD. 12 “But you made the Nazirites drink wine, and commanded the prophets, saying, ‘You shall not prophesy.’ 13 “Behold, I will press you down in your place, as a cart full of sheaves presses down. 14 Flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not retain his strength, nor shall the mighty save his life; 15 he who handles the bow shall not stand, and he who is swift of foot shall not save himself, nor shall he who rides the horse save his life; 16 and he who is stout of heart among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day,” declares the LORD. Israel’s Crimes Vs. 6-8 God’s Activity Vs Israel’s Response Vs. 12 God’s Punishments Vs

Amos 3:1 “Hear this word that the Lord has spoken”… Greatest Prophet Priest King who will come? Matthew 13:18-19

Amos 3:1-2 “Jacob-Israel- Hebrews”. “Elected”… Freely rebelled. Higher standard. “Punishment” …not until vs. 11.

Vs. 3-6 “No”. God is sovereign. “Positive Preachers”. The good, the bad, and the ugly? Will we only serve Him… if He “serves” us?

Vs. 7-8 Revelatory God. Mark 4: And he said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand? 22 For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light. 23 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Revealing to you?

Vs God will call the nations… How embarrassing…. Amos exposing them… Oppression. Violence. Robbery. Would you rather be the prophet Amos… or Jonah?

Vs In the last 5 years… what did you do… to help…

Vs Lazy “Orthodox” Evangelicals… Relaxing “ALL” the time on the porch?

Vs Lazy “Orthodox” Evangelicals… Relaxing “ALL” the time on the porch? Let’s be active…. “Orthopraxis” Orthodox Evangelicals.

Vs “Therefore”… punishment is deserved. Within some years. Two legs/piece of ear. Ex. 22:13. Couch/bed. The Lion of Zion.

Vs Altars of Bethel… Summer/Winter homes. You have multiple homes…

Vs Are you doing your part? Tithes? Offerings? Gifts? Sacrifices? Jesus said you shouldn’t neglect the latter but also do the first. Matthews 23:23 23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.”

Amos 4:1-3 Bashan cows bred and grazed. Un-politically correct. Oppressing & crushing. You don’t delight and want the things the Lord wants… Where your treasure is… there your heart is. Matt. 6:21

Vs. 4-5 Bethel / Gilgal worship. Sarcastic Exaggeration. “Publish them”.

Matthew 6:1-4 1 “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Luke 21:1-3 1 Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, 2 and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. 3 And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. 4 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”

Vs Five Times: Clean teeth… No rain…. Blight and mildew… Locusts…. Pests…. Defeat in war…. Overthrown… God will do… they don’t repent.

Vs Are you ready? God triumphs! What else do you need?
