The Nervous System

The Central Nervous System The master design system that controls everything in your body including; heart rate, eye movements, higher mental processes, and reasoning The most important part of the system is your brain. There are 3 major parts: the hindbrain (lower brain), the midbrain, and the forebrain

The Central Nervous System The Spinal Cord A column of nerves as thick as your thumb that is an extension of your brain Begins at the base of the brain, runs down your back and ends below your waist

The Central Nervous System The Spinal Cord The spinal cord is encased in a protective bony column called the spine Transmits information between the brain and the nervous system and controls some reflexes.

The Central Nervous System The Spinal Cord Cont… A reflex is an automatic, unlearned reaction to a stimulus A spinal reflex is reflex controlled by the spine that bypasses the brain. Ex. knee-jerk reflex, pulling your hand off of a hot stove, or closing your eye when you see something coming toward it (write down 1).

The Peripheral Nervous System Part of the nervous system that connects your central nervous system with other parts of your body Divided into 2 parts The Somatic Nervous System The Autonomic Nervous System

The Peripheral Nervous System The Somatic Nervous System Transmits messages between your central nervous system and your sensory organs and muscles Regulates subtle movements that maintain posture and balance Composed of sensory and motor neurons

The Peripheral Nervous System The Autonomic Nervous System Controls internal bodily processes like heartbeat, respiration, and digestion It is divided into the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system

The Peripheral Nervous System Sympathetic Nervous System Speeds up bodily processes and draws energy from stored reserves Alarm system that heightens arousal and mobilizes bodily resources in times of stress or physical exertion

The Peripheral Nervous System The Parasympathetic Nervous System Fosters bodily processes, such as digestion, that replenish stores of energy Also helps conserve energy by slowing down other bodily processes
