AGENDA

EXPLORING THE PARCC ASSESSMENT (TECH 101, 102, AND 103) Handout, Morning Session, 8:45 to 10:00 am: Exploring the PARCC assessment Go to the website, follow the instructions, and complete the tutorialhttp://parcc.pearson.com/ Take a grade-level assessment As you go through the assessment: What do you notice? What are your concerns? What questions about the test do you have? What are some instructional implications that you notice?

REFLECT AND DISCUSS: PARCC ASSESSMENT AND IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Sit with a small group and share the notes you made with others Five to Three Activity: Individually, take 5-8 minutes and come up with 5 new post-its: What are the five key take-aways about PARCC for your practice? As a group, share and discuss your key ideas. Consolidate and synthesize your key ideas, and identify 3 key ideas for your group. Be prepared to share your key ideas with the rest of the participants.

MORNING SESSION WRAP-UP Carousel: Tour the room and review the key ideas of different groups Handout, Morning Session Take-aways Complete this handout individually. It will be used in the afternoon as you work on your action plan

MORNING SESSION WRAP-UP John Irving, the author of The Cider House Rules, begins with his last sentence: I write the last line, and then I write the line before that. I find myself writing backwards for a while, until I have a solid sense of how that ending sounds and feels. You have to know what your voice sounds like at the end of the story, because it tells you how to sound when you begin.

FOCUS ON THE THREE SHIFTS: WHAT THEY ARE AND HOW CAN WE GET THERE? Overview of Shifts: Focus, Coherence, and Rigor Review: Warm-up on key shifts and fluencies “PARCC: Grounded in the shifts at the heart of the Common Core State Standards” document “Common Core State Standards, Fluency in Mathematics” (TN Core) document

WHAT ARE THE SHIFTS IN THE MATH STANDARDS AT THE HEART OF PARCC DESIGN? 1.Focus: The PARCC assessment will focus strongly where the Standards focus 2.Coherence: Think across grades and link to major topics within grades 3.Rigor: In major topics, pursue conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application. 8

ADVANCES IN ASSESSMENT DEMANDED BY THE SHIFTS Focus: The PARCC assessments will focus strongly where the Standards focus Advance: 70% or more on the major work in Grades 3-8. Focus allows for a variety of problem types to get at concept in multiple ways. Students will have more time to master concepts at a deeper level. 9

ADVANCES IN ASSESSMENT DEMANDED BY THE SHIFTS Coherence: Think across grades and link to major topics within grades Advance: Assessment design is informed by multi-grade progressions in the Standards and the Model Content Frameworks. The key beginnings are stressed (e.g., ratio concepts in Grade 6), as are key endpoints and takeaway skills (e.g., fluency with the multiplication table in Grade 3). 10

ADVANCES IN ASSESSMENT DEMANDED BY THE SHIFTS Coherence: Think across grades and link to major topics within grades Advance: Integrative tasks draw on multiple standards to ensure students are making important connections The Standards are not treated as a checklist 11

ADVANCES IN ASSESSMENT DEMANDED BY THE SHIFTS Rigor: In major topics, pursue conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application Advance: PARCC assessments will reach the rigor in the Standards through innovations in technology and item design 12

INVESTIGATING RIGOR Review article, “A tool for rethinking teachers’ questioning” Sample clips: Grade 5 FractionsGrade 7 Area/Perimeter lassroom-videos/formative-re- engaging-lessons/5th-grade-math- interpreting-fractions/lesson-part-1 lassroom-videos/public-lessons/7th- grade-math-area-and- perimeter/problem-1-part-a As you are watching the clip: What do you notice about the teacher’s questions? How could you categorize types of questions the teacher asks?

INVESTIGATING RIGOR Handout, Investigating Rigor Review the assessment you brought with you: What types of questions are in your assessment? How would you categorize them? What types of questions are missing? What are some questions that you could add? Begin to draft the questions now.

ACTION PLANNING Handout, Action Plan Template Review takeaway document from morning session and all handouts. Begin brainstorming elements of your action plan Handout, Informational Guides to Grade Level Assessments. Review the information guide appropriate to your teaching assignment Review the claims structure. What do you notice? What questions do you have? How does this influence your action planning? Handout, PARCC/CCSS Resources Work individually or as a team and begin your action plan

PARCC SURVEY Handout, Survey: Computer-administrated PARCC test Turn-and-talk Review student responses

CLOSING Handout, Summarizer and Evaluation Next Steps Submit your action plan and evaluation Resources document, action plan template, and powerpoint will be posted on the Cape Cod STEM Network website:
