 Departmental assessment is the systematic and ongoing method of gathering, analyzing, and using information from measured outcomes to improve department outcomes.  The primary purpose of assessment is to improve the quality of services to students, employees, and the community by fulfilling the mission and accomplishing the goals of the College.

 Something we have to do just for SACSCOC  You have to be a research expert to do assessment  You can’t measure what is done in certain departments to improve the College  Assessment is someone else’s job  It will be used to judge a department/individual  The purpose is to prove your department is 100% successful  Assessment is a top down approach

 Ongoing, integrated, and institution-wide research-based planning and evaluation ◦ Systematic review of mission, goals, and outcomes ◦ Continuous improvement of institutional quality ◦ Demonstrate CVCC is effectively accomplishing mission

Affirm CVCC Mission - Achieve 2015 Department Outcomes Assessment Measures Target Goals Results and Finding Actions Based on Results Evidence of Improvement CVCC Departmental Assessment Cycle

 As a department read and review Mission and Goals  Collaboratively within the department select the Mission and Goals that is “most” supported by routine operations  Discuss and brainstorm activities, programs, ideas, ways, etc., your department supports CVCC’s Mission and Achieve 2015 Goals

 Specific statements that describe activities required to support the accomplishment of CVCC Mission or Achieve 2015 Goals ◦ Approximately 5 outcomes  Linked and derived from mission and goals  In addition to mission and goals related, outcomes should include ◦ Student Satisfaction ◦ Employee Satisfaction ◦ Customer Service/ “Point of Service”

 Make sure it is useful and leads to improvements  Consider where and when the assessment will occur  Are there existing assessments?  Multiple measures ◦ Enrollment data ◦ Employee and Student Satisfaction Surveys ◦ Points of Service Surveys ◦ Focus groups ◦ Follow-up phone calls ◦ Documentation of work completed

 Specific  Measurable  Attainable  Results-oriented  Time Specific  Align the target goals with the assessment method

 Compare actual performance with intended performance for each outcome  Keep it simple  Identify areas of strengths and weaknesses for the department  Discussion within department (maybe even students) on how to improve department in relation to mission and goals

 Specific and documented actions  Brainstorm  Collaborate within department  Document ◦ Task completed ◦ New activities ◦ Internal department processes ◦ Changes to operations ◦ Training that occurred as a result

 Trend data  Enrollment data  Student Satisfaction  Employee satisfaction  Narrative from staff discussion  Student/employee comments, interviews, focus groups  New programs
