Read Psalm 136:1-3. Copy the verses on paper. Mark everything that is the same and that is different.

1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever. 2 Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever. 3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords: His love endures forever. Psalm 136

What patterns do you see? It keeps repeating. “His love endures forever.” How many times is this phrase repeated? 26 times.

Read Psalm 139:23. Copy the verse on paper. Mark everything that is the same and that is different.

Psalm Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. What does the verse mean?

Read Psalm 140:4. Copy the verse on paper. Mark everything that is the same and that is different.

Psalm 140:4 Keep me safe, LORD, from the hands of the wicked; protect me from the violent, who devise ways to trip my feet. What does the verse say? How does it say it?

What pattern do you see in all of these examples? Hebrew poetry often repeats. The repeats are not always exact.

Read Proverbs 10:1. Copy the verse on paper. Mark everything that is the same and that is different.

Proverbs 10:1 A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother. What does the verse say? How does it say it? There are contrasts.

Read Proverbs 10:4. Copy the verse on paper. Mark everything that is the same and that is different.

Proverbs 10:4 Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth. What does the verse say? How does it say it? There are contrasts (opposites).

Read Proverbs 10:17. Copy the verse on paper. Mark everything that is the same and that is different.

Proverbs 10:17 Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray. What about the contrasts (opposites)?

What pattern do you see in these last three examples? Hebrew poetry can contrast. The contrasts (opposites) are not always exact.

Choose one of the last verses and write three principles.
