T HE SOLAR SYSTEM IS THE SUN AND THE OBJECTS THAT ORBIT AROUND IT.

T HE SUN IS THE CENTER OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM. The Sun is important because it provides the Earth heat. It is one of the prime ingredients for most Earth life- forms.

P LANETS A planet is a large body of rock or gas that orbits the sun. The solar system has nine planets. (Pluto is a dwarf)

C HOOSE O NE PLANET AND FIND THREE FACTS ABOUT THAT PLANET. W RITE Y OUR F ACTS ON A S HEET OF P APER. MercuryVenusEarth MarsJupiterSaturn UranusNeptunePluto

I NNER P LANETS Mercury Venus Earth Mars They are the four planets closest to the sun. Inner Planets have rocky surfaces, and they are warmer than the outer planets.

E ARTH IS DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER INNER PLANETS. I T HAS A WATERY SURFACE. I T IS THE ONLY PLANET WITH A LOT OF OXYGEN IN ITS ATMOSPHERE. E ARTH HAS PLANT LIFE AND ANIMAL LIFE.

O UTER P LANETS 1. Jupiter 2. Saturn 3. Uranus 4. Neptune 5. Pluto

O UTER P LANETS ARE MADE MOSTLY OF FROZEN GASES. T HEIR SURFACES ARE COLDER THAN THE INNER PLANETS BECAUSE THEY ARE FARTHER AWAY FROM THE SUN. M OST OUTER PLANETS HAVE MANY MOONS.

P LUTO IS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER OUTER PLANETS. I T IS THE SMALLEST PLANET IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM.

C OMPARING P LANET S IZE Print out the following worksheet.worksheet Click on the link below. You will be comparing the planets listed on the worksheet. Be a careful reader! To compare the planets, select a planet from the left and a planet from the right. Then click the compare button in the middle. Planet Size Comparison

P LANET S WITCH -A-R OO See how well you can match up the planets. Start on easy and then increase your level. In spite of how different they look, the Switch-a- Roo game might make you think the Sun, all the planets, and some of their moons were all the same size. Not true! Planet Match
