The evening star. That is the nickname for my favourite planet Venus. It is the second planet from the sun and is made of a central iron core and a rocky mantle, similar to earth. It’s atmosphere is mainly made up of carbon dioxide (96%) and nitrogen (3%), though it does have a small amount of other gasses.

Venus? Venus got it’s name from the Roman god Venus, who is the god of love and beauty. The Romans knew that there was 7 bright objects in the sky that were the seven brightest planets, as Venus was the brightest of the planets it was named after the god of beauty.

Our solar system Venus is the planet most like Earth. Scientists thought that Venus was most likely to have life as it used to be thought to be covered in rainforest. The average temperature there is 460 degrees c. It would take approximately 6 months to get there from Earth. Venus is the second planet from the sun which is the main reason it is so hot.

Trip to Venus? In the 1970s, the Soviet Union actually was able to land more than one probe on the surface of Venus. These scientific probes only lasted a few hours before they were destroyed by the intense heat of the planet. No man has ever travelled to the planet Venus.

Interesting facts Did you know that if you stood on Venus you would weigh 1 kg more! Scientists recently discovered many volcanoes on Venus. They also discovered many mountains that appear to be shaped like pancakes! Venus is often described as Earth’s sister planet as they are so alike.
