SWBAT explain how a tornado forms. Tornados SWBAT explain how a tornado forms.

How Does a Tornado Form? Step One: Step Two: Warm, moist air and cool, dry air meet. This causes instability in the atmosphere. A change in wind direction and increase in wind speed causes a horizontal spinning effect.

How Does a Tornado Form con’t Step 3: Step 4: Rising air within the updraft tilts the rotating air from horizontal to vertical An area of rotation, 2-6 miles wide, now extends through much of the storm.

SWBAT identify and practice tornado safety procedures

Warning Signs Dark often grayish clouds Wall Clouds or an approaching wall of debris Large hail, often without rain Before the tornado, the wind and hail may calm completely down A loud roar that sounds like a train

Safety Procedures During a Tornado: Before a Tornado Hits: Have a plan so everyone knows where to go if a tornado hits. Prepare an emergency kit with food and water for your home in case of disaster. Go to a basement or the lowest level of your house. Get inside a room that does not have windows. (Which rooms could this be?) Put a piece of sturdy furniture or a mattress over you.

Safety Procedures con’t What if you are at school? What if you are outside/in a car? Follow safety procedure set up by school. Go to designated area and sit down on the floor. Crouch down on your knees and protect your head with your hands. If you are in your car, do not try to out run a tornado. Get outside of your car and lay in a ditch or low lying area. Lay flat on the ground. Avoid power lines or damaged areas.

Assignment: Devise a safety plan for your house if we were to have a tornado. Where could you go? What could you grab to cover you up? Is there enough space for your whole family?
