The Need There are more humans enslaved today than any time in history- approximately 32 million people are being trafficked annually. 1 The total market of elicit human trafficking is estimated to be around $98 billion. 2 Women and children are primarily trafficked from high poverty areas, where there are no alternative options for employment Even after a victims is rescued, there are few options for rehabilitation and subsequent employment which is critical because the victim often has no family to support her and has a limited on which to build a future 1 As reported by Kevin Bales, UN consultant on slavery and trafficking 2 As reported by Siddharth Kara, author of Sex Trafficking: Inside the Business of Modern Slavery Nomi Network3

Why we exists Young survivor named Nomi Lived in a remote village along the Thai border Suffered from a mental disorder Nomi is synonymous for know me, know my story know my success. Having inspired from the young girl “NOMI” – Two young women Diana Mao and Supei Liu has registered “Nomi Network” as a 501 (c)3 organization in New York-- For the purpose of eradicating human trafficking and creating a better life for women and their children across the world Nomi Network4

We work with Prostituted women and girls Retired female sex workers Daughters and sisters of Prostituted women Women and girls living in immediate vicinity of red light area Women and girls from the untouchable community Women suffering from domestic violence Physically disabled Survivors of child marriage Homeless and illiterate Nomi Network5

We work for- The Approach Providing livelihoodHelping women in sending their children to school Improving access to social services Reducing vulnerability and trafficking Partnership with the organizations who works with the victims of human trafficking Selection and registration of the women and girls for the training Start Basic life skill training Providing vocational training to improve skill sets (Fabric Bag Making) Providing employment Increasing family Income and Individual savings Helping women to send their kids to school Reenrollment of drop out kids especially girls in the school Supporting women to send their children to hostels Helping women to avail the benefits of social security schemes of Govt. Helping women to get the ID proofs/ voter cards Helping women in availing the benefit of Banking services Legal awareness Reason of vulnerability and trafficking is poverty and illiteracy; we helped women in reducing their poverty by providing livelihood and knowledge. Nomi Network’s Locations Cambodia Why Cambodia ? Cambodia is a source, transit and destination country for human trafficking Cambodia has a problem of child sex tourism UNICEF, concluded that 35% of Cambodia's prostitutes are under the age of 16. Children as young as 5 years old are trafficked. Pimps are reported to imprison young children who are virgins and then present them to a series of bidders India Why India ? Of over 32 million slaves worldwide half are estimated to be in India Manufacturing industry in India comprises 16% of India’s GDP and employs 35 million people Our partner organization is working in 4 Red light area of India Bihar, Maharastra, Delhi and West Bengal Our partner organization’s biggest challenge is creating sustained employment for women Nomi Network7

Component of our Training program Increasing the Leadership skill It includes verbal communication, confidence building, and reading & writing Increasing Entrepreneurship skill It includes basic financial literacy, business acumen and product development Technical skill It includes measuring, stitching, using industrial machines and hygiene Legal counselling It includes awareness generation among women and girls against any kind of violence and exploitation Nomi Network8

Our achievements We started our program in Forbeshganj, Araria District of Bihar in June 2012, and selected 56 women for the training 10 women dropped out saying this program will not help them in earning money So we started our training program with 46 women as a pilot project 18 women are the victims of human trafficking and 28 women are from the untouchable community living in immediate vicinity of the red light area and are victims of domestic violence After 3 month of training we shifted women on Machine and started paying 800 INR each women as a stipend 50% in cash and 50% in Bank Learning hour was 3 hours every alternate day None of the women had any Bank Account We helped them in opening their individual Bank Account Now 100% women has their own Bank Account 95% women were illiterate Now 100% women can read and write English alphabets, Hindi alphabets, their names in English and Hindi greets people in English and now they are learning subtraction, addition and multiplication and some more After 4 month of Machine sewing learning we divided women in 3 groups and assigned task to make ornament fabric pouch in 3 month Nomi Network9

Our achievements Now all the 46 women are in production and we divided their stipend in four parts Monthly Base pay per women Monthly one time bonus: 290 (productivity bonus, attitude, behavior) Learning Bonus: 200 per women Per pouch/Bag: 5 INR Average Income per women per month is INR working days in month Average Saving per women per month is 1500 INR Total average saving per women till date is thousand !8 women’s kids are in hostel of a missionary (Nav Bharat Mission), where women has to pay only 200 INR per month per kid for their lodging, fooding, and education Earlier we were helping women in depositing money in their Bank Account Now women are going their own to deposit and withdraw the money from the Bank The women who left our program initially now started saying to rejoin the program Nomi Network10
