HUMAN TRAFFICKING: A MODERN CRISIS The Imagine Foundation’s Project SAFE The Imagine Foundation P.O. Box Cleveland, Ohio THE IMAGINE FOUNDATION

RIGHTS & WRONGS  What does the phrase “human rights” mean to you? What are some basic human rights?  Having trouble? Think of our U.S. Bill of Rights…  Can you think of some ways those human rights have been put into jeopardy or violated over time? The Imagine Foundation P.O. Box Cleveland, Ohio THE IMAGINE FOUNDATION

 Today, you’ll be learning about a modern crisis of human rights violation that impacts children and young adults in today’s world – the crisis of human trafficking.  Take a few moments to jot down a personal definition of human trafficking – It’s okay to respond with ‘I’m not sure’ or ‘I don’t know.’ The Imagine Foundation P.O. Box Cleveland, Ohio THE IMAGINE FOUNDATION

SIMPLY PUT:  In basic terms, human trafficking is modern-day slavery. It is documented to exist in over 190 countries and in each-and-every state in America. The Imagine Foundation P.O. Box Cleveland, Ohio THE IMAGINE FOUNDATION

 There are three main ways an individual can be exploited, meaning ‘to make use of a person or thing meanly and unfairly, for one’s own advantage.’  Remember – If a person is being exploited, his/her basic human rights are being jeopardized or violated. The Imagine Foundation P.O. Box Cleveland, Ohio THE IMAGINE FOUNDATION

TYPE 1:  How might this image relate to human trafficking? About how old is the young boy in the photo? Where do you think he is? What is he carrying?/What’s his task? The Imagine Foundation P.O. Box Cleveland, Ohio THE IMAGINE FOUNDATION

TYPE 1:  How might this image relate to human trafficking? How do the young women in this image appear to feel as they work? These young women look old enough to work legally. How, then, might their rights be in danger? The Imagine Foundation P.O. Box Cleveland, Ohio THE IMAGINE FOUNDATION

TYPE 1 DEFINED  One form of human trafficking is forced labor.  Modern slavery or indentured service  Migrant workers  Exorbitant labor for unfair or no pay The Imagine Foundation P.O. Box Cleveland, Ohio THE IMAGINE FOUNDATION

COMMON MIGRANT WORKER TRAVEL PATTERNS What items grown, etc. in certain states/regions might present a need for migrants?

TYPE 2:  How does this image relate to human trafficking? How old do you think the boys in this image are? How do they appear to feel? Where do you think the situation shown in this image might occur? The Imagine Foundation P.O. Box Cleveland, Ohio THE IMAGINE FOUNDATION

TYPE 2 DEFINED  One form of human trafficking is forced child soldiery. The Imagine Foundation P.O. Box Cleveland, Ohio THE IMAGINE FOUNDATION

TYPE 3:  How might this image relate to human trafficking? Do you think this establishment is used only for “massage” or in a way such as the Massage Envy franchise? What about the text and/or image on the window sign implies exploitation? The Imagine Foundation P.O. Box Cleveland, Ohio org THE IMAGINE FOUNDATION

TYPE 3 DEFINED  One form of human trafficking is the sex industry.  Forced prostitution  Forced sexual activity, such as circulated images, massage, etc. The Imagine Foundation P.O. Box Cleveland, Ohio THE IMAGINE FOUNDATION

 The three main forms of trafficking are:  Forced labor  Child soldiery  Sex industry Which of these forms of trafficking do you think are “close to home” – in terms of your local community and the United States? Which do you think are worldwide concerns?

THE BIG 4  The four main states in the US where trafficking occurs are: California, Texas, Florida, and New York.  Why might this be? ✕ Consider what these states have in common. ✕ Consider how they differ.

RISK FACTORS  What are some potential risk factors for a child or young adult/teen becoming a victim of trafficking?  Hints: ✕ Gender ✕ Age ✕ Social-economic status ✕ Family/Home life ✕ Level of education ANYone can be trafficked – No matter the age, gender, social class, or level of education

CLOSE TO HOME… How might YOU have contributed to the modern crisis of human trafficking – even already today?
