Demonstrations (focusing on “general” demos and not a specific project that is not open to the broad community) Categories of demonstrations: – Traditional systems (e.g. ATMS and ATIS) – Transit centers – Rail and freight operations – Vehicle centric (V2V and V2I) Locations: – Europe – Asia – US 2

Europe Demonstrations World Congress on ITS 2009 – Stockholm – – Experience Park: ITS in Daily Life – Sustainable Railway – Cooperative Systems Showcase – Demonstration Theatre Cooperative Mobility Showcase held in Amsterdam, March 2010 – COOPERS,CVIS, and SAFESPOT results highlighted and demonstrated – Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge (GCDC) – Organized by TNO and HTAS from the Netherlands. – March 2011: “Technological solutions already developed in the area of cooperative driving will be highlighted by this event, held on a stretch of road between Eindhoven and Helmond (The Netherlands).” – 2012: “International teams competing to deliver the most effective cooperative vehicle-infrastructure system in predetermined traffic scenarios” – 3

Asia Demonstrations Smartway 2007 – Japan effort to highlight ITS technologies ITS-Safety 2010-Japan in Feb 2009 – outdoor exhibits: – "Smart Parking" and "Dynamic Part and Ride“ – variable road dividing lines using the light emitting diodes. – OEM demonstations of safety systems – Vehicle demonstraitons of: ACC(Adaptive Cruise Control) PCS (Pre-Crash Safety Brake) NEDO program – Development of Energy-saving ITS Technologies that is focusing on cooperative and autonomous technologies, namely platooning of heavy trucks. – A demo is scheduled for I believe the end of this calendar year in Japan – Another demo at the end of ITS World Congress 2010 – Busan: – October 25-29, 2010 – Report to be “spending lots of money on demonstrations” – What will be done is quiet 4

U.S. Demonstrations ITS Related demonstrations that include commercial vehicle demonstrations: – ITS World Congress: 2005 in San Francisco 2008 in New York City 2011 in Orlando (see upcoming slides) – Michigan Test Bed – New York CVII Demonstration – ITS America Annual Meetings (limited focused demos) Autonomous / Military Vehicle Demonstrations: – DARPA Grand Challenge I – DARPA Grand Challenge II – DARPA Urban Challenge – 2007 – Ft. Hood Robotics Rodeo – 2009 – AUVSI (Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International) Annual demonstrations – Many smaller, more focused events 5

6 Supporting our customers  Vehicle Integration Infrastructure (VII) – IntelliDrive  Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT)  Next Generation Traveler Information  Transportation Air Quality Solutions  Regional Congestion Pricing multiple technology demonstrations Coming soon Possible permanent ITS pavilion at Disney and International Drive/I-4 Amazing 18th ITS World Congress on ITS – Orlando Technology Demonstrations Overview

7 Demonstration Experience (Current Thinking)

World Congress Technology Demonstrations = 2011 World Congress Technology Deployments Build and demonstrate different deployment options of cooperative systems Establish a large-scale outreach for transportation technology (public, transportation professionals, executives from other industries, etc.) Establish local commitment for vehicle fleets to regularly utilize the infrastructure Leverage USDOT funding for infrastructure deployment and marry with regional commitment for O&M Beyond Demonstrations: Deployment Options
