ALCoS: M.2.5 Illustrate fractions with multiple representations, including manipulatives, drawings, and verbal descriptions. Recognizing that fractions such as 1/1, 2/2, 3/3, and 4/4 are equivalent to one whole Using the terms numerator and denominator to label parts of a fraction Recognizing that one-half of an object is not always the same as one-half of a different object

Prerequisite Skills Kindergarten Recognize that a whole object can be divided into parts. Distinguishing parts of a whole as equal or not equal First Grade Identify parts of a whole with two, three, or four equal parts.

Looking Ahead Third Grade Demonstrate equivalent fractions using concrete objects or pictorial representations. Recognizing pictorial representations of equivalent fractions and decimals in tenths and hundredths Recognizing different interpretations of fractions, including parts of a set or a collection, points on a number line, numbers that lie between two consecutive whole numbers, and lengths of segments on a ruler Locating proper fractions with common denominators 2 through 10 on a number line with fractional parts of the whole indicated on the number line Solving problems that involve addition or subtraction of fractions with common denominators Comparing fractions with common denominators using the symbols, and =

Journaling with Fractions Look at this pizza. Notice the color, size, shape, and anything else that might stand out to you. Hurry– you have 1 minute to write anything you notice about this pizza.

Journaling with Fractions Write a Fraction Fairy Tale. Red Riding Hood loved to bake. She heard that Three Little Pigs had moved in a new brick house just down the street. Being a good neighbor, Red wanted to welcome the Pigs into the neighborhood. So, she baked an apple pie. When the pie was freshly out of the oven, she put it in her basket and skipped down the street. When she got to the Pigs’ home, the Three Little Pigs were very excited about the pie, but couldn’t decide who would be the Pig to eat it. Red knew that the pie would have to be cut and to keep the Pigs from fussing, she cut it into three equal pieces. Each pig ate 1/3 of the apple pie and lived happily ever after!

Journaling with Fractions Complete a “Fraction Mad Libs”. I ate a ___________________ with __________________. Since I shared, we each got to eat __________________ of the whole. (Your Favorite Food) (Name of a Friend) (Fraction)

Journaling with Fractions Daily Data Fractions I like to eat ___ for breakfast. cereal pop-tarts CerealPop-tartsBothNeither 6/183/187/182/18

Fraction Fajitas Use tortillas as a manipulative to teach fractions. Each student will need two tortillas– one to represent the whole and one to represent the fraction.

Mrs. Housley’s Peculiar Pizzas Create pizza templates. Cut yarn long enough to “slice” each pizza a few times. Students will use the yarn to divide the pizza into even pieces based on the order taken. Use worms, dinosaurs, bugs, etc. to create toppings on a fraction of the pizza.

Reach up high as you can go. Bend down low and touch your toes. Lift your hands three fourths the way, Jiggle and shake 'em any old way.

Turn one third and wave your hand. Turn another third and wave once more. Turn another third and you're right back home Ready to what you did before.
